Thrower, Conde Shine as Jacks Top Broncos

ARCATA, Calif. – Tremendous performances from Alexia Thrower and Isamar Conde guided the Humboldt State women's basketball team to a 73-65 victory over Cal Poly Pomona Thursday night in Lumberjack Arena.

The Green and Gold improved to 14-6 overall and 12-5 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action with the win.

"I'm very proud of our team's performance tonight. We played with great energy for 40 minutes," said HSU Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We had a defensive gameplan heading into the night and we did a tremendous job executing it."

Thursday's game was a matchup between two of the best teams in the CCAA and the game didn't disappoint. Pomona's Rebecca Islas got the visitors started scoring their first seven points and giving them an early advantage. A Jordyn Shane 3-pointer with 4:26 on the clock put the Broncos ahead by 10, 18-8, but Conde answered with consecutive treys to get the home team back in the fight. HSU ended the quarter on a 14-5 run and trailed by just one point, 23-22.

Thrower supplied eight of the Jacks' 18 second-quarter points to lead them to a 40-36 lead at intermission. Conde paced the team with 18 points in the opening 20 minutes and was the Green and Gold's top sharpshooter hitting on 4-of-7 opportunities from outside the arc.

The teams wrestled for the lead for much of the third quarter, but Thrower delivered back-to-back layups to feed the home team's lead as it swelled to 46-40 with 7:20 remaining. HSU kept its advantage until the 4:32 mark when Islas evened the score at 50-all. The Jacks turned to Thrower to keep the Broncos at bay as the junior poured in the home team's final eight points of the frame to knot the score at 58-58.

HSU opened the final quarter with a 5-0 spurt to retake the lead and led the rest of the way. A late push from the visitors, aided by a Dominique Dotson trey, made it a four-point game in the final two minutes, but the home team closed out the game at the free-throw line.

The dynamic duo of Thrower (26) and Conde (25) combined for 51 of the Jacks' 73 points, and each corraled a team-leading nine rebounds. Tyra Turner finished with 10 points, eight assists and three steals.

"Isa got us going in the first half by hitting some big shots, and Lexi is kind of the silent assassin who can quietly turn in a great night," said Bento-Jackson. "Tyra also did a great job of distributing the basketball to our playmakers. Overall, I was very pleased with tonight's performance."

The Jacks continue the homestand with a game against Cal State San Bernardino Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear black for the team's annual Black Out Game.
