CHICO, Calif. – Rain may have delayed this series against California Collegiate Athletic Association rivals, but Monday's doubleheader showed both teams have shaken off the early-season rust. Humboldt State softball split the doubleheader versus Chico State losing game one 3-0 before bouncing back for a 2-1 victory.
"We didn't have the outcome we wanted in the first game but it was a good hard fought game," said HSU Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "Lexee kept us in the game, we just didn't get the big hits when the opportunities were presented to us. Of course We are very happy with the outcome of game two. It was an all around big time team win. The difference between to the two games is we took advantage of opportunities given to us in game two. Kudos to Holt in getting her first win as a Lumberjack."
Wildcat starting pitcher Brooke Larsen tossed a complete game shutout and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning in the series opener. Larsen recorded her fourth win of the season as
Danica Grier and
Lauren Lipe were the only Jacks able to record a base hit against the righty.
Lexee Sheiring got the start for the Green and Gold in game one and logged 6.0 innings. The sophomore allowed three earned runs, walked six and struck out six.
In the second game, an offensive surge delivered in the fourth frame proved to be all the Jacks needed behind an impressive pitching performance from freshman
Megan Holt. Grier led off the fourth with a single, and Chico's Naomi Monahan sat down the next two North Coast batters. Three consecutive singles from
Illa Haley,
Mariah Tovar and
Haley Suter provided all the offense HSU needed to take a 2-0 advantage.
Holt faced the minimum in the fourth and fifth innings before surrendering an unearned run in the sixth. The freshman from Kelso, Wash., went the distance and gave up one hit, walked five and fanned three on her way to her first collegiate victory.
Grier and Haley each finished with a pair of hits in game two.
HSU resumes the series against Chico Tuesday at noon.
