Golden Eagles Deal Men’s Basketball a 64-55 Road Loss

LOS ANGELES – The Humboldt State men's basketball team's road woes continued Saturday as it lost to Cal State Los Angeles 64-55.

The Lumberjacks needed a win Saturday to cement their spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament as they sit at 10-10 in league play. HSU ranks eighth in the standings with two games left on the regular season schedule.

A 17-1 run that began with 2:45 left in the first half and extended to the 17:36 mark in the second proved to be the North Coast team's undoing. The Green and Gold matched the home team shot for shot for almost 18 minutes before the Golden Eagles flipped the script. Leading 27-23 following a Calvin Young II free throw with 4:17 on the clock, Cal State LA scored eight of the final nine points of the half to take a 31-28 advantage at intermission. Turnovers plagued the Jacks down the stretch as their five miscues following Young's free throw aided the home team's comeback.

HSU connected on just 31 percent of its shots in the first half and things didn't improve for the offense after its halftime break. The Golden Eagles made a statement scoring the first nine points of the second half, while the Jacks were limited to just three points in the first five minutes. Cal State LA increased its lead to a game-high 12 points, 55-43, with 6:26 to go, and HSU's 26.7 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes made the advantage insurmountable.

Justin Everett had one of his best performances of the season leading the Jacks with 22 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, while Young turned in a 13-point, 15-rebound effort.

The Green and Gold won the rebounding battle 51-42, but a lack of offensive execution held the team back. HSU was 2-of-17 (11.8 percent) shooting from 3-point range and committed a season-high 24 personal fouls.

HSU returns home to play host to Sonoma State and San Francisco State next week. The Seawolves come to town on Thursday, and the Gators visit for Senior Day on Saturday. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m.
