Turner’s Triple-Double Effort Leads Jacks to Road Win

LOS ANGELES – Junior guard Tyra Turner recorded her first career triple-double as the Humboldt State women's basketball team cruised to its sixth consecutive victory with a 71-63 road win over Cal State Los Angeles Saturday.

"Tyra was unbelievable tonight. Both games this week she has completely controlled the game and played outstanding on both ends of the floor," said HSU Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "It is great to go home with these two road wins. The team was focused all weekend and they took care of business."

Turner finished the afternoon with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to become the first women's basketball player in the California Collegiate Athletic Association to accomplish the feat this season. The junior's triple-double was made all the more special as she just missed out on one Thursday evening as she registered 18 points, 10 boards and eight assists versus Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Saturday's game was decided by eight points, but the score wasn't indicative of the Jacks' dominance. The North Coast team led for 39:15 seconds and put on a clinic and continued its drive to the postseason despite clinching a March 5 CCAA Tournament home game with Thursday's win. Cal State LA scored the game's opening basket, but the Jacks responded with 12 of the next 14 points. HSU ended the first quarter up by nine, 20-11, as Isamar Conde and Jovanah Arrington sank back-to-back treys in the closing minutes to keep the visitors rolling.

The Jacks began the second quarter with a 12-2 run that sent the Golden Eagles reeling. Gabriel Carbajal ended the first half with a flourish as she cleaned the offensive glass following a Molly Dixon miss and sank a jumper at the buzzer to put the Jacks in front 42-25.

HSU kept the momentum going in the second half as Conde and Turner combined for 11 of the team's 23 points.

Turner earned the triple-double with 9:22 remaining as she pulled down her 10th rebound of the game. The Jacks were outscored 18-6 in the final 10 minutes, but it was too little, too late for the Golden Eagles as they suffered their fourth loss in the last five games.

"I'm really happy we got the two wins this weekend," said Turner. "I'm just trying to do anything and everything I can to help our team win."

Conde led Green and Gold scorers with 23 points on 9-of-19 shooting and corraled five rebounds. Alexia Thrower and Carbajal finished the game with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Jacks return home for their final two home games of the regular season. HSU hosts Sonoma State Thursday and San Francisco State on Saturday in Lumberjack Arena. Both games will tip off at 5:30 p.m.
