Men's Basketball Seeks CCAA Tournament Berth this Weekend

| By:
ARCATA, Calif. — The Humboldt State men's basketball team looks to punch its ticket to the conference tournament as the Lumberjacks end the season at home versus Sonoma State on Thursday before Senior Recognition Night on Saturday against San Francisco State. Both games are scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.

Needing just one win to solidify a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Playoffs, the Jacks fell short last week as they dropped games to Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Los Angeles. The results move HSU to 16-12 on the year and its 10-10 CCAA record has the team sitting in the eighth spot in the conference standings. The Green and Gold boast the most efficient offense in the league as they average 77.8 points per game. The CCAA's hottest offense also features the conference's scoring leader in senior forward Justin Everett who averages 15.4 points per game. Junior sharpshooter Jackson Strong will look to stretch the floor and free up Everett inside as he leads the conference with 82 made 3-point attempts, averaging 2.9 per game.

"I like our position," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "If we win, we're in and these next two games mean something. Obviously, Thursday we want to take care of business up front and beat Sonoma State and we're in the tournament. If we win both of these games, we have a possibility of hosting a CCAA playoff game next Tuesday."

Sonoma has dropped its last three games and enter the week after suffering losses to UC San Diego and Cal State San Marcos. The Seawolves are 6-14 in CCAA play and mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Sonoma State will be playing the spoiler role Thursday and will look to draw from its 69-66 victory over Humboldt back in November. Junior forward Isaac Davidson leads the Seawolves with 13.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game while senior guard Lewayne Grant averages 9.6 points and a team-best 3.3 assists.

San Francisco started its week with a win versus Cal State San Marcos before finishing with an 87-65 loss to UC San Diego. The Gators are 12-8 when facing CCAA opponents and have clinched a conference playoff berth. Junior guard Jiday Ugbaja will look to lead the offensive charge as he averages a team-best 13.3 points and 3.4 assists per game. On the defensive end, Chiefy Ugbaja is ranked third in the conference in steals per game averaging 2.2.
