Women’s Basketball Finishes Regular Season with Seawolves, Gators

| By:
ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's basketball team continues its run to the postseason as it hosts Sonoma State Thursday and San Francisco State Saturday night. Both games tip off at 5:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena with Saturday being Senior Recognition Night.

The Lumberjacks hold a 17-6 overall record and their 15-5 league record has them ranked as the No. 3 team in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. HSU has already clinched a home playoff game for the first round of the CCAA Tournament which will be held Tuesday, March 5 at 7 p.m. against an opponent still to be determined.

The Green and Gold, winners of 11 out of their last 12 games, enter the week on a six-game winning streak following victories over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Los Angeles. Junior point guard Tyra Turner was tabbed the CCAA's Co-Player of the Week after averaging 15.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and nine assists over the two games. Turner became the first player in the conference to record a triple-double this season after finishing with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists versus LA. HSU also boasts one of the most formidable scoring duos in the conference as Alexia Thrower (17.1) and Isa Conde (16.5) are ranked third and fourth respectively in points per game. Collectively the Jacks own the CCAA's best turnover margin at 5.26 and rank first in the nation in fewest turnovers.

"Both teams are playing better basketball right now than the first time we played them in November," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "Everyone's situation is different. Our situation is trying to put ourselves in the best position for the NCAA Tournament while both our opponents this week are fighting to get into the conference tournament, so they have a lot of motivational factors as well. Everyone is going to be giving each other their best punch, and this time of year you can't afford to take a night off or even a possession off. You really have to focus on putting a full 40 minutes together."

Sonoma State is currently in the midst of a three-game losing streak after dropping games to UC San Diego and Cal State San Marcos last week. The Seawolves are 10-13 on the year and sit at 8-12 in CCAA play. Sonoma is the ninth team in the conference standings and is looking to jump up a spot to solidify a playoff berth, with the top eight teams being invited to the tournament. The Seawolves will look to junior forward Ugochi Anudokem as she leads her team with 13.2 points and a conference-best 12.5 rebounds per game.

San Francisco has lost nine of its last 10 games and finished last week without a win, with losses to Cal State San Marcos and UC San Diego. The Gators own a 9-16 overall record and are 8-12 in conference play which ranks them 10th in the CCAA standings. Senior forward Jhaina Stephens will look to establish an offensive rhythm as she leads San Francisco with 14.2 points per game. Senior guard Toni Edwards has established herself as an efficient facilitator as she is third in the conference with 4.6 assists per game.
