Holland Breaks CCAA Record, Jacks Go 1-2 in Tripleheader

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Hanna Holland broke the California Collegiate Athletic Association's career stolen base record and Humboldt State softball went 1-2 in a Friday tripleheader versus No. 13 UC San Diego.

HSU won the series opener, 6-5, saw UC San Diego rally for a 9-8 victory in game two, and the Tritons shutout the Jacks 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap. The Green and Gold moved to 4-9 overall and 2-8 in conference play with Friday's results.

The Lumberjacks opened the afternoon with a comeback victory against the nationally-ranked Tritons. Rylie Carlier hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to lead the Green and Gold rally with her team trailing 4-0. Trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh, newcomer Mariah Kalamaras kept things going with a two-out RBI double to even things up. Holland and Danica Grier followed Kalamara's game-tying RBI with run-scoring singles of their own to put HSU up 6-4. Jasmine Hill put together an impressive relief appearance for the Green and Gold. The senior logged 5.0 innings and allowed just one run as she improved her record to 2-2.

After swiping a base in game one, Holland stole two more in the next to capture the conference's all-time stolen base record. The senior from Oakdale, Calif., finished the afternoon with 143 career stolen bases surpassing the previous record of 142 held by Cal State Dominguez Hills' Cindy Perry–Brown.

HSU fell behind 2-1 in the first inning of the second game, but a three-run homer from Mariah Tover put the North Coast squad in front two innings later. The Green and Gold increased their advantage to 8-3 with a four-run fifth. Maddie Allen provided a two-run double to start the scoring and Micaela Harris bunt single plated another run before a wild pitch brought Allen home from third. The game was far from over as UC San Diego started a rally of its own with two runs in the fifth. Down 8-5 with just three outs standing between the Tritons and their third conference loss of the season, UC San Diego overcame the deficit with a three-hit, four-run inning.

Game three was all Tritons. HSU was limited to just four hits in their second meeting with UC San Diego ace Robyn Wampler. The home team scored three runs in the second, added two more in the fifth before ending the nightcap with three in the fifth.

Inclement weather is forecast for Saturday, but the series finale is scheduled for a noon first pitch.
