Men’s Basketball Stumbles in Regular Season Finale

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's basketball team finished its 2018-19 regular season Saturday night with a loss to visiting San Francisco State, 71-67, in Lumberjack Arena.

The Jacks move to 17-13 overall and own a 11-11 record when facing California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents. HSU will travel to face Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday in the first round of the CCAA Playoffs. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Kellogg Gym.

"It was a great game that we are proud of as Lumberjacks," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "I think we played really good team defense. I'm extremely proud of what these guys just did against a very good San Francisco State basketball team. Missing free throws is always deflating but I thought our guys mentally fought back and gave us multiple chances to win the game."

The Jacks came up empty going 0-for-7 from beyond the arc in the first half which allowed San Francisco to jump out to an 11-4 lead to begin the game. HSU struggled from the free-throw line shooting 40 percent on 10 attempts as the Gators took a 36-30 advantage into the locker room.

HSU failed to get into an offensive rhythm as they finished with a 38.6 percent shooting percentage as a squad. The Green and Gold did find some success in the transition game as they scored eight fast break points while holding the Gators to zero.

The North Coast squad tied the game at 66 with 16 seconds left on the clock thanks to a pair of Jamarlin Jackson free throws. The next possession Jiday Ugbaja dropped a dagger on the home team as he nailed an NBA range three-pointer with a hand in his face as the Gators held on for the victory.

Justin Everett recorded his third double-double of the year as he finished with a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds. Calvin Young II had his most efficient scoring night as he recorded a season-high 20 points while also grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking five shots.

Ugbaja scored 18 points and also recorded a pair of steals while Tyler Jackson also added 18 points and finished with a team-high nine rebounds.
