POMONA, Calif. – The 2018-19 season came to a bitter conclusion for the Humboldt State men's basketball team Tuesday night as the Lumberjacks lost their opening round game of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament 85-67 to No. 20 Cal Poly Pomona.
"Our guys battled every inch of the way against a very good Cal Poly Pomona team," said HSU Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "Our locker room after the game focused on our senior leader ship and loyalty. Each senior brought so much to our culture and will be a part of our lumberjack bloodline forever."
HSU's only lead of the game came in the first two minutes as the Jacks started on a 5-2 run. The Broncos aggressive offense paid dividends as the home team recorded seven made free throws while the Green and Gold failed to reach the line in the first half. Trailing by 10 with 2:41 left in the half, a Victory Mijas trey and Jamarlin Jackson jumper pulled the Jacks within five, 32-27. Turnovers plagued the Green and Gold in the opening half as they committed 11 total miscues. Pomona took a 36-27 advantage into the locker room.
The Broncos outrebounded HSU 44-36 and foul trouble kept the North Coast squad from staging a comeback. HSU trimmed the deficit to nine points with five minutes remaining in the second half, but Pomona's defense held the Jacks scoreless in the final 1:48.
Jamarlin Jackson dropped 14 points for HSU on a 5-for-7 shooting night. Justin Everett scored 13 while Calvin Young II finished with a team-best seven rebounds.
The Broncos had three players in double-digit scoring figures led by William Christmas who scored 19 points and shot a perfect 11-for-11 from the free-throw line.
HSU finished the season with a 17-14 overall record.
