Thrower’s Career Night Lifts Jacks Over San Francisco State

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's basketball team concluded its regular season with a 76-66 win over San Francisco State Saturday night in Lumberjack Arena.

HSU earned its eighth consecutive victory and improved to 19-6 overall and a 17-5 against California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents. The Green and Gold earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament and will play host to Cal State East Bay Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.

"Tonight was a perfect night for our seniors," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "I'm sure all the girls, just as the coaches did, wanted to come out and get a good win for Jovanah and Isa. San Francisco plays very hard and I knew this was going to be a hard fought game. I kept telling the team throughout the game that I liked our energy, I liked our intensity, I thought we were competing the whole way and we didn't really have any lulls. I'm really happy with the focus we showed for the entire 40 minutes."

In a back-and-forth matchup that saw eight ties and nine lead changes, the Jacks scored six unanswered points to end the second quarter to take a 38-33 lead into the locker room. The North Coast squad crashed the boards effectively all night as they finished with 18 offensive rebounds and 16 second-chance points.

The Jacks' largest lead came with 7:28 remaining on the clock as a pair of Tyra Turner free throws gave the home team a 67-51 advantage. Despite being outscored by the Gators 18-14 in the final frame, the Jacks leaned on their persistent defense and held on for the victory. The Green and Gold forced 20 turnovers and converted them into 21 points which allowed the team to overcome an 18.8 percent shooting percentage from beyond the arc.

Alexia Thrower earned her 16th double-double of the season as she finished with a career-high 34 points and 10 rebounds. Thrower came up six points short of tying the single-game record for scoring set by Trina Dukes in 1994.

"Lexi was an absolute beast tonight," said Bento-Jackson. "She knew she was going to have a tough matchup but, from the beginning of the game, I knew she was ready to go. She was phenomenal tonight."

Tyra Turner also earned a double-double as she recorded 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with her six assists and three steals. Seniors Isamar Conde and Jovanah Arrington finished their regular season careers with the Green and Gold and were recognized for their commitment and achievements as members of the HSU women's basketball program before the game. Conde scored five points, dished out three assists, and blocked a shot, while Arrington added 17 points, three assists, and four rebounds.

"It was a team effort tonight," said Thrower. "When we go out there we encourage each other, we motivate each other, and I think that was the main contributor to tonight's game. We came into the game super excited because we knew it was our last game of the season and we wanted to go out with a bang."
