Softball Splits Sunday Versus Cal State East Bay

ARCATA, Calif. – A strong pitching performance from Taylor Proctor helped the Humboldt State softball team split Sunday's doubleheader versus Cal State East Bay and avoid a sweep versus the visiting Pioneers. The Lumberjacks won the first game of the afternoon, 10-6, but lost the series finale, 5-2.

Proctor surrendered just two hits through four innings and her offense built an 8-1 advantage. The Jacks struck first with a two-out, two-run single from Danica Grier in the second. HSU committed two defensive miscues in the following frame which allowed the visitors to plate their first run. East Bay issued five walks and two hits in the fourth as the Green and Gold made it 8-1. Mariah Kalamaras and JoAna Mullins supplied the Jacks' base hits in the six-run frame.

The Pioneers trimmed the home team's lead to three, 8-5, with four runs in the top of the fifth, but the Jacks responded with two more runs the following inning to put things out of reach.

Grier and Kalamaras each finished with two hits in three RBI in the victory. Proctor tossed 4.2 innings and allowed five runs, none were earned, en route to her first win of the season. The freshman was relieved by Megan Holt who picked up her first save of the year with 2.1 innings of work.

East Bay got on the board first in the late game, but it was a four-run fifth inning that put the visitors over the top. Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, Rylie Carlier and Illa Haley got the offense going with back-to-back singles. Micaela Harris drew a walk to load the bases and two batters later Mullins fired a ground-rule double to centerfield to give the Jacks a 2-1 lead. The Pioneers retook the lead for good with four runs on three hits in the fifth.

HSU stranded seven baserunners in the loss. Holt tossed 6.0 innings and gave up five runs, three earned, as she suffered her seventh loss of the season.

The Green and Gold travel to Turlock, Calif., for the annual Tournament of Champions next week. HSU opens the five-game tournament with Montana State-Billings Friday at 9 a.m.
