Hawaii Hilo Edges Softball in Tournament of Champions Finale

| By:
Box Score TURLOCK, Calif. – Humboldt State softball wrapped up its Tournament of Champions schedule as it fell to Hawaii Hilo 3-1 Sunday morning.

The Vulcans broke up the tie ballgame in the top of the first as an HSU fielding error allowed Markie Okamoto to safely cross the plate. In the top of the fourth frame, pitcher Megan Holt allowed a two-out, two-run single up the middle from Chloe Domingo.

In the bottom of the fourth, HSU threatened with runners on first and second with two away. Head Coach Shelli Sarchett called for the double steal as Micaela Harris took third and advanced home following an errant throw from the catcher.

Taylor Proctor got the start for the Green and Gold and surrendered an unearned run off three hits. Illa Haley turned in a solid performance at the plate going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and she also drew a walk.

Vulcan starting pitcher Billie Derleth proved a tough matchup for the Green and Gold as she tossed 6.1 innings, allowing one run off five hits.

The North Coast squad will look for more favorable results when it returns to conference action next week as they travel to Cal State San Bernardino for a four-game series. First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for Friday, April 5 at 1 p.m. at the Coyote Softball Field.
