Softball Celebrates Four Seniors in Final Homestand

| By:
ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State softball team prepares for its final homestand of the season as it hosts Cal State Monterey Bay in a four-game series beginning Friday. First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for 1 p.m., while Saturday's twinbill will serve as a Senior Day celebration and will start at 11 a.m.

The Green and Gold had their eight-game winning streak snapped last week as they were swept in four games versus Stanislaus State. HSU moved to 19-27 overall with a 10-24 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

The Lumberjack offense boasts four players who are hitting over .300 with Rylie Carlier leading the pack with a .364 batting average. She also has six home runs this season, which is tied for the fifth-most in the conference. Second baseman Danica Grier has also had a stellar year at the plate as she ranks eighth in the CCAA with five home runs and 30 RBIs.

Four Jacks will finish their careers Saturday as Carlier, Illa Haley, Jasmine Hill and Hanna Holland will don the Green and Gold one last time.

"It's our last homestand and we are sending four players onto the next chapters of their lives," said Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "It's not an easy weekend. Not only do we have Senior Day, but that rivalry we have with Monterey Bay adds a little more intensity to it. We are just excited to have another day to play softball. We are looking forward to having great weather, getting to play on our home field, and sending the seniors off right."

Monterey Bay (25-21) hopes to finish the year off strong as they try to solidify a playoff spot and gain momentum entering the CCAA Tournament. The Otters' pitching has been hard to hit all season as their team ERA of 2.41 is the third lowest in the conference. Courtney Hennings leads the Monterey Bay offense with a .338 batting average and has a team-high 32 RBIs.

"Monterey is always tough," said Sarchett. "They are sitting in the four spot and our hope is if we can take enough from them, we can knock them out of the playoffs. Right now we are playing the spoiler, and it would be even better if we can spoil them and end our senior weekend on a high."
