Otters Outlast Softball in Doubleheader Sweep

ARCATA, Calif. – A pair of late-inning rallies propelled Cal State Monterey Bay to a doubleheader sweep of Humboldt State softball Friday afternoon. The Lumberjacks lost game one 5-4, and the Otters scored four runs in the final frame of their 7-4 victory.

Friday's losses extended the Jacks' losing streak to six straight. The Green and Gold are 19-29 overall and 10-26 in conference play.

HSU managed just six hits and stranded seven runners in a difficult offensive performance in game one of the four-game series. The Otters led off the game with a double, and Korina Kreug came around to score the game's first run on a sacrifice fly three batters later.

In the bottom of the first, the Jacks answered with three runs of their own to take a 3-1 lead. Hanna Holland struck out to begin the home half, but a Danica Grier walk and back-to-back singles from Micaela Harris and Rylie Carlier got the Green and Gold on the board. JoAna Mullins hit a slow roller to first in the following at-bat, but the throw home was wide of the mark and allowed two more runs to cross home plate.

An RBI single from Kreug trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the second, and a sacrifice fly in the top of the third knotted the game at 3-3. Mullins delivered a one-out, go-ahead single in the bottom of the frame to put the home team back in front by one.

HSU starter Lexee Sheiring was lifted from the game after the third inning in favor of Megan Holt, but the freshman walked in the game-tying run in the fifth to make it 4-4. Senior Jasmine Hill relieved Holt in the sixth, and the Otters scored the game-winning run off the righty in the seventh.

Harris finished game one with three hits and a walk. The sophomore also scored two runs.

Monterey Bay started the second game of the afternoon with two runs on four hits against Holt, who didn't escape the opening frame. Holt was replaced by Hill who logged the next six innings of work.

Courtney Hennings drove in the Otters' third run in the second inning, before the Jacks responded with four runs over the next four frames. Once again, HSU had plenty of opportunities in the nightcap, but they were unable to break the game open. With the bases loaded and one out in the fourth, Illa Haley plated the home team's first run. Harris and Carlier hit consecutive singles to start the fifth. Mullins struck again with a sacrifice fly and Haley Suter shot an RBI single into left field to even the score at 3-all.

Harris executed the squeeze play to drive Holland in from third in the sixth, which gave Jacks a 4-3 advantage. The Otters got to Hill in the seventh scoring three runs off the senior before punctuating the victory with another run against Sheiring, who entered the game in relief.

Suter and Mariah Tovar each tallied two hits in the second game, while Holland, Harris, Grier and Sarah Salinas each recorded a stolen base.

Saturday is Senior Day for the Green and Gold and fans are invited to arrive early to celebrate the careers of the four HSU seniors. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
