CARSON, Calif.--- Summer Hansen had a match high 11 kills in Humboldt State's season opening match against Cal State Dominguez Hills in the Toro Classic in Carson, Calif. The Toros defeated Humboldt State in three sets (25-10, 25-20, 25-11) earlier this afternoon. Humboldt State will finish out its play in the Toro Classic on Saturday with a 9am match against Academy of Art and a 1pm match against Notre Dame de Namur.
QUOTES FROM COACH KELLY: "Out first match did not go as well as we had hoped it would," said Coach Kelly. "We came out playing with a lack of aggression and confidence. We weren't getting quality swings on the ball, and our serve receive wasn't consistent as it needs to be. We are ready to put that match behind us and work towards having a better day tomorrow. We have plenty to work on and I look forward to seeing us make some adjustments for tomorrow's match-ups."
SET ONE: Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 15-3 lead in the first set, but a kill by
Summer Hansen started a string of three straight points by the Lumberjacks which cut the lead to 15-6. The Toros increased their lead to 19-7, but a kill by
Lexi Riggs snapped that three-point streak by CSUDH. The hosts took six of the next nine points to take the first set 25-10.
SET TWO: CSUDH jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second set, but HSU scored five of the next six points capped by a kill by Riggs to take a 7-6 lead. The 'Jacks increased their lead to 13-8 on a k9ill by Hansen off an assist from
Juliana Bertolucci. A combined block by Tay Benitez-Fanslow and Renee Wheeler tied the match at 17-17 for the Toros.
Malia Coyle and
Emma Flewell recorded a combined block to give HSU back the lead, 18-17, but the Toros scored eight of the set's final 11 points to take the second set 25-20.
SET THREE: The Toros started the final set scoring 10 of the first 11 points to take a 10-1 lead. They increased their lead to 16-4, but a kill by
Malia Coyle off an assist from
Riley Tishlarich cut the Toro lead to 16-5. The 'Jacks could not get any closer as the Toros took the third and final set 25-11 to take the match 25-11.
