Lumberjacks to Face CSUDH and CSULA on The Road This Week

ARCATA, Calif..---  The Humboldt State women's basketball team will look to its winning ways this weekend with a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) games in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.  The Lumberjacks will be in Carson for a 5:30pm scheduled tip-off with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday, January 16.  They will travel to Los Angeles on Saturday, January 18 for a 1pm scheduled tip-off with Cal State L.A.
 
RECAP OF HSU'S LAST GAME:  The Lumberjacks went 0-2 last weekend to fall to 9-6 overall and 5-5 in the CCAA.  They started the weekend with a 59-56 overtime loss to then No. 23 Cal State San Marcos.  Alexia Thrower posted her seventh double-double of the season by scoring 23 points and grabbing 16 rebounds to go with her four steals.  Tyra Turner added 12 points and six assists for the 'Jacks.  HSU lost to UC San Diego 88-82 on Saturday despite all five starters scoring in double digits.  Thrower paced the 'Jacks with 24 points while Turner chipped in 18 points.  Madeline Hatch scored 14 points, Gabrielle Carbajal added 13 points and Molly Dixon chipped in 11 points. 
 
UPDATE ON THE LUMBERJACKS:  Humboldt State enters this weekend with a 9-6 overall record and a 5-5 record which places them in eighth place.  The Lumberjacks are one game out of fifth place (Chico State, Sonoma State and Stanislaus State) and two games out of second place (Cal State San Marcos, UC San Diego and Cal Poly Pomona).  Cal State East Bay leads the league with its 8-2 CCAA record.
 
HSU is averaging 66.4 points and 62.6 points per game while begin out-rebounded 38.5 to 33.0.  Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Alexia Thrower (21.8 ppg), Molly Dixon (10.0 ppg) and Madeline Hatch (10.0 ppg).  Thrower also leads the team with her 30 steals, seven blocked shots, 10.7 rebounding average and 51.9% shooting from the field.  Tyra Turner has dished out a team high 68 assists and shooting a team best 80% from the line.  Dixon leads the team with her 28 threes made and 35% shooting from beyond the arc. 
 
AMONGST THE NATION'S LEADERS:  Alexia Thrower is tenth in the nation in scoring and total rebounds while she is 18th in rebounding average and 22nd in double-doubles.  Heading into this weekend, she is averaging 21.8 points and 10.7 rebounds per game while shooting 51.9% from the field and 73.7% from the line.  The senior has dished out 25 assists, recorded 30 steals and blocked seven shots.  Thrower recorded her seventh double-double of the season this past Thursday against No. 23 Cal State San Marcos with a 23-points, 16-rebound performance.
 
Tyra Turner is 20th in the nation with her 5.2 assists per game average.  The senior point guard has dished out 68 assists with 33 turnovers in 13 games.  She is averaging 8.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game to go with her 80% shooting from the charity stripe.  Turner also has 21 steals this season.
 
NO TURNOVERS:  The Lumberjacks as a team are second in the nation in NCAA Division II in fewest turnovers per game and fourth in fewest turnovers.  As a team, the Lumberjacks are second in fewest turnovers per game (10.7) and fourth in fewest turnovers (160).
 
26-10 AT LUMBERJACK ARENA: The Lumberjacks are 26-10 at Lumberjack Arena since the beginning of the 2017-18 season.  

D2SIDA WEST REGION:  In the latest D2SIDA NCAA Division II West Region Poll that was released on January 13, Humboldt State is still receiving votes.  The top five teams are 1.) Alaska Anchorage, 2.) Hawaii Pacific, T3.) Azusa Pacific, T3.) UC San Diego, 5.) Cal State San Marcos, 6.) Cal State East Bay, 7.) Northwest Nazarene, 8.) Western Washington, 9.) Cal Poly Pomona, 10.) Point Loma.  Biola, Humboldt State and Simon Fraser are all receiving votes.
 
MOVIN' ON UP:  Tyra Turner is moving on up the career lists at Humboldt State.  She is second in assists (453), third in steals (205), seventh in free throws made (255) and ninth in points (994).  Madeline Hatch is ninth with her 120 threes made in her career.  Alexia Thrower has scored 806 points and grabbed 438 rebounds. 
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  Two Lumberjacks have recorded double-doubles this season in Alexia Thrower and Tyra Turner.  Thrower has seven double-doubles including one each of the Lumberjacks' last three games while Turner has one.
 
10.7:: Humboldt State is just turning the ball over 10.7 times per game while forcing 16.1 turnovers per game by its opponents.  The Lumberjacks are recording 7.2 steals per game paced by Alexia Thrower's 30 followed by Tyra Turner's 21.  Molly Dixon has 15 and Gabrielle Carbajal each have 15 and Madeline Hatch has 11 steals this season.
 
11.9:  The Lumberjacks are averaging 11.9 assists per game with Tyra Tuner leading the way with her 68 total assists and just 33 turnovers in 12 games.  Three other Lumberjacks have a positive assist to turnover ratio in Gabrielle Carbajal (32 assists, 21 turnovers), Molly Dixon (19 assists, 16 turnovers) and Emily Packham (four assists, three turnovers). 
 
TOROS IN REVIEW:  Cal State Dominguez Hills enters this weekend with a 7-9 overall record and a 4-6 CCAA record.  The Toros are in tied for ninth with Cal State L.A., just one game behind the Lumberjacks in the CCAA standings.  They are averaging 74.4 points per game while giving up 72.8 points per game.  CSUDH is out-rebounding its opponents 44.4 to 39.1.  Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Ariana Harper (11.4 ppg), Ahlisha Henderson (10.4 ppg) and Destinee Williams (10.3 ppg).  Henderson leads the team with her 7.0 rebounding average while Alezane Henry is shooting a team high 53.8% from the field.  Jasmine Phoolka has made a team leading 25 threes and Gabrielle Leos has connected on a team high 37% of her attempts from beyond the arc.  Janelle Sumilong leads CSUDH with her 48 assists and 27 steals and Lea Anderson has connected on a team leading 85.2% of her attempts from the line.
 
Since 2007, Humboldt State leads the all-time series 18-7 including winning the last six in a row.  The 'Jacks won 73-63 in Arcata and 76-66 in Carson last season.
 
GOLDEN EAGLES IN REVIEW:  Cal State L.A. enters its game with Stanislaus State on Thursday with 6-10 overall record and a 4-6 CCAA record.  The Golden Eagles are averaging 68.9 points per game while giving up 71.7 points per game while they are being out-rebounded 44 to 37.5.  Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Sydney Bordonaro (17.8 ppg), Nicole Flennaugh (11.6 ppg) and Alyssa Fisher (10.5 ppg).  Rachael Diregolo leads the team with her 6.8 rebounding average and 38 blocked shots while shooting a team high 52.5% from the field.  Bordonaro leads CSULA with her 60 threes made, 44.8% shooting from threes and 46 assists.  Flennaugh is shooting team best 88.6% from the line while Mackenzie Barnes has recorded a team high 26 steals.
 
Humboldt State won the first meeting between the two teams on November 23 in Arcata 72-70 behind Alexia Thrower and Tyra Turner's double-doubles.  Thrower scored 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while Turner scored 14 points and dished out 13 assists.  Since 2007,  HSU leads the all-time series 17-9 including winning the last three games in a row.
