CARSON, Calif.--- Humboldt State started its two-game road trip in Southern California with a 64-58 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills this evening in Carson, California.
Alexia Thrower paced the Lumberjacks with 17 points while
Gabrielle Carbajal chipped in 13 points and dished out five assists for HSU.
Tyra Turner scored six points to become the eighth member of the 1,000-point club for Humboldt State women's basketball.
FIRST QUARTER: Humboldt State (9-7, 5-6 CCAA) took an 11-7 lead mid-way through the first ten minutes of the game on an
Alexia Thrower lay-up. The Lumberjacks increased their lead to 13-7 on two free throws by Thrower. A Dijour Ledbetter lay-up cut the 'Jack lead to 13-11, but the guests finished the quarter on a 7-0 run capped by a Thrower lay-up off a pass from
Sandin Kidder to take a 20-11 lead.
SECOND QUARTER: The Lumberjacks started the second quarter taking a 22-14 lead on a lay-up by
Alexia Thrower off a pass from
Gabrielle Carbajal. They increased their lead to 24-17 on a lay-up by Carbajal. A three by Destinee Williams capped a 6-0 run by the Toros to cut the deficit to 24-23 with 5:26 left in the half. Twice the Lumberjacks increased their lead to four including on a three by
Madeline Hatch, but the Toros finished the half outscoring HSU 6-4 to take a 31-29 lead heading into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER: A
Tyra Turner lay-up cut the Toro lead to 32-31 just ninety seconds into the third quarter. Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-9, 5-6 CCAA) increased its lead to 40-33 on an Ariana Harper lay-up. HSU came right back and tied the game at 40-40 with 2:46 left in the quarter on a lay-up by Turner. The Toros finished the third quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 49-42 lead on a lay-up by Alzena Henry.
FOURTH QUARTER: The Toros opened the final quarter taking a 53-45 lead on a lay-up by Dijour Ledbetter in the first two minutes. A jumper by
Gabrielle Carbajal off a pass from
Alexia Thrower cut the 'Jack deficit to 57-51 with just a little under five minutes left in regulation. CSUDH increased its lead to 60-51 with 56 ticks left in regulation. Twice in the final minute the 'Jacks cut the deficit to six including on a three by Carbajal as the Toros took the 64-58 victory.
1,000 POINT CLUB: With her six points this evening,
Tyra Turner scored her 1,000 points in her career. She also has 455 assists and 207 steals to go with her 1,000 points.
JUST TWO: Humboldt State went 11-for-13 from the line including
Alexia Thrower going five-for-five while
Gabrielle Carbajal,
Molly Dixon and
Madeline Hatch each going two-for-two.
THROWER: Alexia Thrower has scored 823 points and grabbed 445 rebounds in her career in the Green and Gold since joining them in 2018-19. She scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds this evening.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will continue its road trip in Southern California on Saturday afternoon at 1pm when the Lumberjacks take on Cal State L.A. The Lumberjacks defeated the Golden Eagles 72-70 on November 23 in Arcata. Cal State L.A. defeated Stanislaus State 69-60 this evening in Los Angeles.
