Lumberjacks Split Season Series With Cal State L.A.

HSU falls 80-74 on the Road Despite Four Players in Double Digits

LOS ANGELES, Calif.---  Despite four players scoring in double digits paced by Tyra Turner's 17 points, Humboldt State lost 80-74 on the road in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) game with Cal State L.A.  With the loss, the Humboldt State split its season series with the Golden Eagles.  Also scoring in double digits for the 'Jacks were Gabrielle Carbajal and Madeline Hatch each with 15 points while Alexia Thrower added 14 points for the visitors.
 
FIRST QUARTER:  The first quarter went back and forth until Madeline Hatch hit a three off an assist from Molly Dixon as the 'Jacks took an 8-7 lead.  Humboldt State (9-8, 5-7 CCAA) increased its lead to 12-9 on back to back jumpers by Alexia Thrower and Gabrielle Carbajal.  Cal State L.A. took a 13-12 lead on a jumper by Mackenzie Barnes, but the 'Jacks finished the quarter outscoring their hosts 6-4 to take an 18-17 lead into the final quarter.
 
SECOND QUARTER:  Humboldt State started the second quarter on a 7-0 run capped by a Sandin Kidder jumper to take a 25-17 lead three minutes into the quarter.  The Lumberjacks increased their lead to 27-17 on another jumper by Kinder this time off a pass from Gabrielle Carbajal.  Cal State L.A. cut the deficit to 27-24 with 3:54 left in the quarter, but a three by Tyra Turner off a pass from Emily Packham increased the guests' lead to 35-28. The Golden Eagles finished the half on a 4-0 run to cut the 'Jack lead to 35-32 heading into the halftime.
 
THIRD QUARTER:  Cal State L.A. (8-10, 6-6 CCAA) kept its run going as the hosts took a 41-37 lead three minutes into the new half on a three by Sydney Bordonaro.  A lay-up by Bordonaro increased the Golden Eagle lead to 45-39.  A three by Madeline Hatch capped a 9-2 run by the Lumberjacks as they took a 49-48 lead with 3:45 left in the third quarter.  HSU increased its lead to 51-47 on another trey by Hatch off a pass from Tyra Turner.  Cal State L.A. scored the next eight points to take a 55-51 lead, but a three by Molly Dixon off a pass from Turner cut the deficit to 55-53 heading into the final quarter.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:  The Lumberjacks started the final quarter outscoring their hosts 8-6 to tie the game at 61-61 on a three by Gabrielle Carbajal off a pass from Molly Dixon three minutes into the final quarter.  Twice the Golden Eagles took a four-point lead including 67-63 with 4:38 left in regulation.  A jumper by Rachael Diregolo gave CSULA a 72-65 lead with just 76 seconds to go, but a three by Madeline Hatch off a pass from Tyra Turner made it 72-68.  In the final minute, Cal State L.A. went eight-for-eight from the line as the Golden Eagles won 80-74.
 
SEASON HIGH:  Gabrielle Carbajal tied her season high with 15 points.  She went six-for15 from the field including two-for-seven from three-point land.  She also had five rebounds, two assists and one steal for the Lumberjacks.
 
FOUR IN DOUBLE FIGURES:  HSU had four players in double digits paced by Tyra Turner with 17 points.  Gabrielle Carbajal and Madeline Hatch each had 15 points and Alexia Thrower added 14 points for the 'Jacks.
 
NINTH: With her five threes made this afternoon, Madeline Hatch now has 127 three-point field goals made in her career which is ninth on the HSU all-time career list.
 
BACK HOME:  Humboldt State will return home this Thursday for a two-game home stand beginning this Thursday, January 23 at 5:30pm when the Lumberjacks host Cal State East Bay.  HSU will host Cal State Monterey Bay a week from today at 5:30pm.
