LOS ANGELES, Calif.--- Humboldt State finished the weekend 1-1 in Southern California after an 81-74 road loss to Cal State Los Angeles despite the trio of
Isaiah Pope,
Jackson Strong and
Rob Lewis combining for 52 of the Lumberjacks' 81 points. Pope paced the 'Jacks with 19 points while Strong chipped in 17 points and Lewis added 16 points.
FIRST HALF: Humboldt State (7-10, 3-9 CCAA) scored the first five points of the game capped by a three by
Isaiah Pope off an assist from
Jackson Strong. Cal State L.A. followed that with a 12-3 run to take a 12-8 lead five minutes into the game. The Lumberjacks came right back with a 9-0 run of their own to take a 17-12 lead capped by an
Amari Green free throw. The hosts tied the game at 22-22 with 8:09 left in the half on a jumper by Michael Ajiboye, but once again the 'Jacks retook the lead 26-24 with 6:43 left in the first half. In the next two minutes, CSULA took a 34-30 lead on a three by Sean Estes. HSU tied the game at 36-36 on three free throws by
Deion Alston. Cal State L.A. finished the half outscoring its guests 7-4 to take a 43-40 lead into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Cal State L.A. (10-8, 5-7 CCAA) took a 46-40 lead on a three by Ja'Sean Lewis to begin the second half. The Lumberjacks cut the Golden Eagle lead to 50-49 on a three by
Jackson Strong off a pass from
Amari Green at the 14:20 mark of the second stanza. Two free throws by Bailey Kikuchi gave CSULA a 56-52 lead, but once again the Lumberjacks battled back and tied the game at 58-58 on a three by
Rob Lewis off of one of
Isaiah Pope's season high five assists. The guests took the lead for the first time in the second half on two free throws by Pope, 66-64, with 8:29 to go in the game. They increased their lead to 69-65 on a three by
Jackson Strong off a pass from Pope. Cal State L.A. went on a 4-0 run to tie the game at 69-69 with a little under five minutes to go in regulation. Two free throws by
Amari Green gave HSU a 71-69 lead and then the 'Jacks increased their lead to 72-69 on a free throw by Pope.
The Golden Eagles outscored HSU 9-0 to take a 78-72 lead with just 32 ticks on the clock. A jumper by Lewis cut the deficit to 78-74, but the Golden Eagles went three for four from the line to take the 81-74 victory.
POPE: Isaiah Pope scored 19 points for his fifth straight game in double digits. He went six-for-eight from the field including three-for-four from beyond the arc while going four-for-six from the line. He also had a season high five assists with one turnover in 32 minutes.
TEN FROM BEYOND THE ARC: The Lumberjacks went 10-for-20 from three-point land including
Jackson Strong going five-for-eight.
Isaiah Pope made three of his four attempts while
Rob Lewis went two-for-three.
FOUR WITH MORE A'S THAN T'S: Four Lumberjacks had more assists than turnovers this afternoon keyed by
Isaiah Pope's five assists and one turnover.
Amari Green had two assists and no turnovers while
Jackson Strong had one assist and no turnover.
Gabrys Sadaunykas had two assists with one turnover.
