LA JOLLA, Calif.--- The fourth ranked UC San Diego Tritons (20-1, 14-1 CCAA) outscored the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks 41-25 in the second half to key their 85-63 victory this evening at RIMAC in La Jolla.
Amari Green paced HSU with 15 points and was one of four 'Jacks to score in double digits.
Leland Green and
Rob Lewis each had 12 points while
Zachariah Christian chipped in 10 points for the visitors.
FIRST HALF: An old-fashioned three-point play by
Jackson Strong and a three-pointer by
Leland Green gave Humboldt State an early 6-2 lead in the first minute of the game. The nationally ranked Tritons took a 13-10 lead at the 16:13 mark of the first half, but the 'Jacks went on an 8-2 run capped by an
Amari Green jumper off a pass from
Gabrys Sadaunykas to give HSU an 18-15 lead. A lay-up by Sadaunykas off a pass from Strong increased Humboldt State's lead to 23-15 with nine minutes left in the half. UC San Diego retook the lead, 28-26, with just five minutes on the clock but a three by
Rob Lewis gave HSU a 29-28 lead on its next possession. UC San Diego went on a 12-4 run to take a 40-33 lead. A three by
Leland Green cut the visitors' deficit to 42-38, but a lay-up by Mikey Howell gave the hosts a 44-38 lead heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Humboldt State (7-13, 3-12 CCAA) cut the deficit to 46-42 on a
Jackson Strong jumper off a pass from
Zachariah Christian in the first two minutes of the new stanza. UC San Diego went on a 15-1 run to take a 61-42 lead in the next five minutes. The Tritons increased their lead to 70-45 mid-way through the second half. A three by
Amari Green off a pass from Strong cut the deficit to 82-63 with less than a minute to go in the game. Martin Trombe's three made the final UC San Diego 85-63.
ONCE AGAIN: Humboldt State had its 18
th game of at least three players scoring in double digits. This evening four players scored in double digits in
Amari Green (15 points),
Leland Green (12 points),
Rob Lewis (12 points) and
Zachariah Christian (10 points).
CAREER HIGH: Amari Green scored a career high 15 points this evening. He went six-for-seven from the field including a perfect three-for-three from beyond the arc. He also grabbed five rebounds which tied his season high.
