SAN MARCOS, Calif.--- Humboldt State outscored the Cal State San Marcos Cougars 16-10 in overtime to carry the Lumberjacks to a 91-85 road conference victory in San Marcos this afternoon.
Jackson Strong scored a career high 34 points while making a career high eight three-point field goals to lead the way for the 'Jacks. Three other players scored in double figures for HSU in
Isaiah Pope and
Rob Lewis each with 13 points while
Amari Green added 10 points for the victors.
FIRST HALF: Back to back treys by
Jackson Strong and
Isaiah Pope gave Humboldt State the early 6-1 lead in the first two minutes of the game. A three by Blake Seits gave Cal State San Marcos (11-11, 7-9 CCAA) capped a 6-0 run by the Cougars as they took a 7-6 lead. Another trey by Strong gave the 'Jacks a 17-13 lead eight minutes into the game. The visitors increased their lead four minutes later to 26-18 on a lay-up by
Deion Alston off a pass from Pope. Back to back treys by Strong and
Zachariah Christian gave HSU a 32-20 lead with four minutes left in the half. A three by
Rob Lewis increased the Lumberjacks' lead to 38-25 late in the half. Cal State San Marcos finished the half on a 9-0 run to cut HSU's lead to 38-34 heading into the half.
SECOND HALF: Jayce McCain cut HSU's lead to 38-36 on the Cougars' first possession of the second half. A three by
Jackson Strong off a pass from
Rob Lewis increased the Lumberjacks' lead to 45-39 four minutes into the second half. A three by Blake Seits capped a 5-0 run by the Cougars as they cut HSU's lead to 45-44. Humboldt State (8-13, 4-12 CCAA) followed that Cougar run with a 5-0 run capped by a Strong three off a pass from
Leland Green as they took a 50-44 lead.
Isaiah Pope's three off a pass from Strong increased the 'Jack lead to 62-54 with 8:44 left in regulation. The Cougars cut the Lumberjack lead to 64-61 at the 7:07 mark, but HSU increased its lead to seven (71-64) in the next two minutes to take a 71-64 lead on a Strong three off a pass from
Amari Green. Cal State San Marcos did not go away as the Cougars tied the game at 73-73 on a free throw by Khalil Fuller with 62 seconds to go in regulation. A jumper by
Leland Green gave HSU back the lead, 75-73, with just 35 seconds on the clock. A Fuller lay-up once again tied the game for CSUSM, this time at 75 with 0:11 showing on the clock. HSU had a chance to win the game, but its three-point attempt fell short as the game went into overtime.
OVERTIME: Humboldt State scored the first five points of the overtime period on a lay-up by
Amari Green and a three by
Zachariah Christian as the Lumberjacks took an 80-75 lead. Khalil Fuller's jumper cut the 'Jack lead to 80-77, but HSU scored the next four points on a back to back jumpers by
Leland Green and
Amari Green. Once again, the Cougars battled back and cut their deficit to 84-81 with 1:51 left in the overtime period. Humboldt State sealed the win as the 'Jacks went seven-for-nine from the charity stripe led by
Amari Green going four-for-five.
Rob Lewis went two-for-two and
Leland Green went one-for-two as HSU took the 91- 85 road overtime CCAA victory.
CAREER NIGHT: Jackson Strong scored a career high 34 points this afternoon to key the Lumberjack win. The senior went nine-for-15 from the field including eight-for-13 from beyond the arc. His eight treys were also a career high as he now has 155 in his career at HSU. Strong also went eight-for-nine from the charity stripe to go with his four rebounds, one assist, one blocked shot and two steals.
AMARI GREEN: Amari Green followed his career high 15 points on Thursday at No. 4 UC San Diego scoring 10 points this evening. The sophomore guard averaged 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in the two games for the 'Jacks this weekend.
FOUR IN DOUBLE DIGITS: Humboldt State had four players score in double digits paced by
Jackson Strong's 34 points.
Rob Lewis and
Isaiah Pope each chipped in 13 points while
Amari Green added 10 points for the victors.
19 ASSISTS: The Lumberjacks had 19 assists on their 27 field goals made this afternoon paced by
Rob Lewis' season high seven assists.
Leland Green added four assists while
Amari Green dished out three and
Zachariah Christian had two.
2-0 IN OVERTIME: Humboldt State is 2-0 in overtime this season with both of them coming on the road. The Lumberjacks' other win in overtime was on January 16, a 96-93 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.
BACK HOME: Humboldt State returns to Lumberjack Arena this week for a pair of CCAA games. The 'Jacks will host Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, February 6 and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, February 8. Both games with 7:30pm scheduled tip-offs.
