ARCATA, Calif..--- The Stanislaus State Warriors held off a strong second half by the Humboldt State Lumberjacks to propel them to a 92-87 victory at Lumberjack Arena.
Jackson Strong paced the Lumberjacks with a season high 25 points while
Leland Green chipped in 17 points and
Zachariah Christian added 12 points.
FIRST HALF: Stanislaus State (9-4, 5-3 CCAA) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first minute of the game. A three by Vida Faniel increased the visitors' lead to 12-4 at the 15:18 mark of the first half. The Lumberjacks went on a 7-0 run capped by an
Amari Green three off a pass from
Zachariah Christian which cut the Warrior lead to 12-11. Stanislaus State increased its lead back to eight (24-16) with just under ten minutes left in the half on a three by Darius Scott. An old-fashioned three-point play by
Deion Alston cut the deficit to 24-23 with 8:19 on the clock. The Warriors increased its lead to 36-29, but HSU finished went on a 7-0 run capped by a three by
Isaiah Sampson off an assist from
Amari Green to tie the game at 36-36 with 70 seconds to go in the first half. Two made free throws by Xavier Francois gave Stanislaus State a 38-36 lead heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Humboldt State (6-7, 2-6 CCAA) opened the new half on a 6-2 run on three consecutive lay-ups by
Zachariah Christian and
Isaiah Pope as the hosts took a 42-40 lead. The Warriors took a 48-43 lead on a lay-up by Xavier Francois, but a three by
Leland Green off an assist from
Jackson Strong cut HSU's deficit to 54-53 at the 12:32 mark of the second half. Another assist from Strong led to a jumper by Christian to tie the game at 61-61 with a little under ten minutes left in regulation. The hosts took a 63-62 lead on a lay-up by Christian off a pass from
Amari Green, but the guests went on an 8-0 run to take a 70-63 lead. A three by Strong off a pass from
Gabrys Sadaunykas cut the Warrior lead to 72-70 with just 4:31 to go in the game.
Stanislaus State increased its lead to 86-75 with 92 ticks on the clock. Back to back three's by Strong and
Deion Alston cut the Warrior lead to 92-87, but it was a little too late as the visitors took the 92-87 CCAA road win.
FIRST GAME: Deion Alston in his first game of the 2019-20 season scored nine points, dished out three assists and recorded a steal while grabbing two rebounds. Alston was three-for-seven from the field including connecting on two of his four attempts from beyond the arc.
STRONG FOR THREE'S: Jackson Strong tied his career high with 25 points this evening. He connected on six of his 15 attempts from beyond the arc. The senior shooting guard also was a perfect seven-for-seven from the line while dishing out three assists, grabbing three rebounds and recording a steal in 38 minutes.
TWO OTHERS IN DOUBLE DIGITS: Besides
Jackson Strong's 25 points,
Leland Green and
Zachariah Christian also scored in double digits. Green scored 17 points while dished out six assists off the bench and Christian chipped in 12 points for the hosts.
23/17: Humboldt State had 23 assists and 17 turnovers this evening led by
Leland Green's six assists and one turnover.
Jackson Strong,
Deion Alston,
Isaiah Pope and
Zachariah Christian each had three assists while
Amari Green and
Gabrys Sadaunykas had two assists apiece.
