ARCATA, Calif..--- The visiting Cal State San Marcos Cougars held off the Humboldt State Lumberjacks this evening in a 76-74 victory at Lumberjack Arena.
Leland Green had 18 points off the bench while
Isaiah Pope chipped in 15,
Jackson Strong added 12 and
Zachariah Christian scored 11 points for the 'Jacks. HSU will host No. 6 UC San Diego this Saturday at 7:30pm.
FIRST HALF: An early three by Blake Seits gave the Cougars an 11-5 lead five minutes into the game. Two made free throws by
Isaiah Pope capped a 4-0 run by the Lumberjacks as they cut the lead to 11-9. Cal State San Marcos (8-7, 4-5 CCA) increased its lead to 18-11 with 10:40 left in the first half on a jumper by Darae Elliott. A rare four-point play by
Jackson Strong off a pass from
Zachariah Christian cut the Cougar lead to 25-20 with 7:38 left in the first half. Humboldt State kept its rally going as they cut the visitors' lead to 26-25 on a three by Christian off a pass by Strong. A lay-up by Elliott increased the Cougar lead to 35-29 with just a little under three minutes left in the first half. Two made free throws by
Gabrys Sadaunykas cut the Cougar lead to 35-33, but a lay-up by Kyle Scalmannin gave CSUSM a 40-35 lead with just 47 seconds left in the first half. Back to back jumpers by Pope and Christian cut the Cougar lead to 40-39 heading into the half.
SECOND HALF: The visitors took a 47-41 lead early in the second half, but the 'Jacks would not go away as an
Isaiah Pope jumper off a pass from
Jackson Strong tied the game at 57-57 at the 11:51 mark of the second half. A three by
Leland Green off a pass from
Gabrys Sadaunykas gave HSU a 63-61 lead with seven minutes left in regulation. A lay-up by Jayce McCain gave the Cougars a 69-68 lead with 4:21 left on the clock. Two made free throws by
Leland Green gave HSU back the lead (70-69), but CSUSM went on a 4-0 run to take a 73-70 lead.
Isaiah Pope's two free throws cut the 'Jack deficit to 73-72, but the Cougars outscored the 'jacks 3-2 to take the 76-74 victory.
FOUR IN DOUBLE DIGITS: Four Lumberjacks scored in double digits led by
Leland Green's 16 points off the bench.
Isaiah Pope added 15 points and
Jackson Strong chipped in 12 points and
Zachariah Christian scored 11 points for HSU.
JUST FOUR: Humboldt State (6-8, 2-7 CCAA) went 19-for-23 from the line paced by
Jackson Strong's six-for-six performance.
Isaiah Pope went four-for-four while
Zachariah Christian was two-for-two.
UP NEXT: HSU will host No. 6 UC San Diego this Saturday at 7:30pm. The Tritons defeated Stanislaus State 74-60 in Turlock this evening.
