ARCATA, Calif..--- Despite being up by as many as 17 early in the second half, Humboldt State could not hold off Chico State's second half rally as the Wildcats spoiled the Lumberjacks' senior night 70-67.
Alexia Thrower recorded her 11
th double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds while
Gabrielle Carbajal chipped in 14 points. Also scoring in double digits were
Madeline Hatch with 12 points and
Tyra Turner with 10. Turner tied the school's all-time career list with 510 in her career.
FIRST QUARTER: A three by
Gabrielle Carbajal off a pass from
Molly Dixon gave HSU a 14-4 lead in the first five minute of the game. The 'Jacks increased their lead to 12 twice in the next couple of minutes including on a lay-up by Carbajal to give the hosts a 20-12 lead heading into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: Humboldt State (15-12, 11-11 CCAA) increased its lead twice to 17 including 25-8 on a three by
Madeline Hatch off one of
Tyra Turner's five assists. Chico State cut the 'Jacks lead to 27-24 on a jumper by Daisha Abdel Kader with three minutes left in the half. A jumper by
Alexia Thrower off another pass from Turner increased the hosts' lead to 35-24. Two free throws by Hannah Washington cut Chico State's deficit to 35-26, but free throws by
Gabrielle Carbajal increased the Lumberjacks' lead to 37-26 heading into the half.
THIRD QUARTER: A lay-up by
Gabrielle Carbajal gave HSU a 44-30 three minutes into the half. Chico State (17-10, 13-8 CCAA) cut the Wildcat deficit to 44-38 with five minutes left in the third quarter. A three by
Tyra Turner off a pass from
Alexia Thrower increased HSU's lead to 52-40, but a three by Maddy Wong capped a 9-2 run by the Wildcats as they cut the 'Jack lead to 54-49 heading into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: An old-fashioned three-point play by
Alexia Thrower off a pass from
Gabrielle Carbajal gave HSU a 57-49 lead to begin the final ten-minute period. A three by Maddy Wong cut HSU's lead to 57-54, but once again the 'Jacks took a 60-53 lead on a jumper by
Sandin Kidder. They increased its lead to 63-55 on a three by
Madeline Hatch off a pass from
Tyra Turner with six minutes left in the game. Chico State went on a 13-4 run in the next five minutes to take a 68-67 lead capped by a three by Vanessa Holland. The Wildcats sealed the win with two free throws by Daisha Abdel Kader to take the 70-67 victory.
TIED FOR THE ALL-TIME LEAD: With her five assists,
Tyra Turner tied Trina Dukes for the all-time career lead with 510 assists during her four-year career at HSU. She also had three steals and scored 10 points to give her 241 steals and 1148 points. Turner is third in steals and sixth in scoring in HSU career lists.
ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Alexia Thrower score 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her 11
th double-double of the season and her second in a row. She has scored 1095 points in her two-year career at HSU.
NUMBER 5: Madeline Hatch is fifth on HSU's all-time list in treys with 148. She went four-for-nine this evening for 12 points for the 'Jacks.
RIGHT NOW: Heading into the final game of the regular season on Saturday, HSU is the number eight seed. Depending on how games go on Saturday, the 'Jacks cane move up to seventh in the final standings and will play at UC San Diego or Cal State San Marcos in the first round on Tuesday in the First Round of the CCAA Championships.
