Humboldt State To Face UC San Diego in First Round of CCAA Championships

Lumberjacks Will Be Making Their Third Straight Appearance in CCAA Championships

ARCATA, Calif.---   For the third straight year, the Humboldt State Lumberjacks will be making an appearance in the CCAA Basketball Championships.  This is the tenth Lumberjack appearance in the last 13 years.  Humboldt State will travel to La Jolla, Calif., to face UC San Diego in the First Round of the CCAA Basketball Championships.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm on Tuesday, March 3 at RIMAC Arena on the campus of UC San Diego in La Jolla.
 
LAST GAME:  Humboldt State lost its regular season home finale this past Thursday 70-67 to Chico State despite Alexia Thrower's 11th double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds.  Thrower went seven-for-15 from the field including going one-for-three from beyond the arc.  She made eight of her nine attempts from the line while dishing out two assists, recording two steals and blocking one shot.  Gabrielle Carbajal chipped in 14 points while Madeline Hatch scored 12 points and Tyra Turner added 10 points and dished out five assists.
 
LUMBERJACKS IN REVIEW:  The Lumberjacks finished the regular season with a 15-12 overall record and an 11-11 CCAA record.  HSU finished tied for seventh place with Sonoma State and earned the seventh seed in the CCAA Basketball Championships as the 'Jacks swept the season series from Sonoma State. 
 
Humboldt State is averaging 70.0 points per game while giving up 65.3 points per game.  The 'Jacks are being out-rebounded 37.1 to 32.1.  Four players are averaging double digits in scoring in Alexia Thrower (22.4 ppg), Tyra Turner (10.7 ppg), Gabrielle Carbajal (10.5 ppg) and Molly Dixon (10.3 ppg).  Madeline Hatch is next with her 9.1 scoring average.
 
Thrower also leads the team with her 53.9% shooting from the field, 9.6 rebounding average and 13 blocked shots.  Turner has dished out a team high 125 assists while recording a team leading 55 steals.  She leads HSU with her 82.2% shooting from the line.  Hatch leads the 'Jacks with her 52 treys made while Carbajal is shooting a team high 37.1% from three-point land.
 
11TH DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  With her 23-point, 11-rebound performance on Thursday, Alexia Thrower recorded her 11th double-double of the season.  Three other 'Jacks have recorded double-doubles this season in Sandin Kidder (two), Gabrielle Carbajal (one) and Tyra Turner (one).
 
ONE AWAY:  Tyra Turner tied Trina Dukes as the all-time assist leader in Humboldt State history.  She now has 510 assists in her career.  She is also third at HSU with her 239 steals and is sixth with her 1148 points. 
 
ALSO 1,000:  Alexia Thrower has scored 1087 points in her two-year career in the Green and Gold heading into Tuesday's game at UC San Diego.  This places her eighth on HSU's all-time scoring list. 
 
FOURTH IN TREYS:  Madeline Hatch has made 148 three-point field goals in her career at HSU, which places her fourth on the all-time list at Humboldt State.
 
FIVE-TIME CCAA POTW:  Two Lumberjacks have been named the CCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week in Alexia Thrower and Tyra Turner.  Thrower has earned the honor four times while Turner once.
 
10/13:  With this year's appearance in the CCAA Basketball Championships, the Lumberjacks are making their tenth appearance in the last 13 years.  This is also the third straight appearance for the 'Jack all under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson.  HSU captured the CCAA Basketball Championships and earned the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Championships in 2017-18.  That season, Humboldt State defeated Cal State East Bay 54-53 in the first round, Cal Poly Pomona 69-53 in the semi-finals and UC San Diego 76-75 in the finals.  Humboldt State also captured the championships in 2009-10, when the 'Jacks defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 77-56, UC San Diego 82-78 and Chico State 85-55.

TRITONS IN REVIEW:  UC San Diego finished its regular season 22-5 overall and 18-4 in the CCAA.  The Tritons tied for first place with Cal State San Marcos, but the Cougars earned the number one seed in the CCAA Basketball Championships as they swept the season series from the Tritons.  They had their 14-game winning streak snapped in a 75-57 loss at Cal State San Marcos this past Saturday afternoon.
 
UC San Diego is outscoring its opponents 70.9 points to 60.9 points while the Tritons are out-rebounding their opponents 37.9 to 36.4.  Julia Macabuhay leads UCSD with her 17.7 scoring average, 109 assists, 48.6% shooting from the field and 29 steals.  Tyla Turner (Tyra Turners sister) is averaging 11.5 points per game while Sydney Sharp is averaging 10.6 points per game.  Sharp leads UCSD with her 6.6 rebounding average and 61 treys.  Sydney Brown is shooting a team high 41% from three's and 86.4% from the line while Isabelle Parker has blocked a team high 14 shots.
 
HSU vs. UCSD:  Since 2007, UC San Diego leads the all-time series with Humboldt State 20-10 including winning both games this season.  Humboldt State's last win over the Tritons was in the CCAA Basketball Championship Game in 2018 in Pomona, a 76-75 'Jack win when HSU's Jovanna Arrington hit a three with three seconds left to go in the game off an assist from Tyra Turner.  Arrington finished with nine points while Turner paced HSU with 18 points.  Tyra's sister, Tyla, who now plays for UCSD scored 11 points.  Kayala Sato paced UCSD with 22 points while Mikayla Williams (who now plays for the University of San Francisco) had 14 points and 12 rebounds.
 
UC San Diego won the first meeting in Arcata 88-82 behind Julia Macabuhay's 24 points while Alexia Thrower paced HSU with 24 points.  The Tritons won the second meeting 81-65 in La Jolla behind Sydney Sharp's 20 points.  Thrower had 25 points for HSU while Turner chipped in 20 points.
