SAN RAFAEL, Calif--- Humboldt State was trailing by nine points at the beginning of the fourth quarter and cut its deficit to just three with 16 seconds left, but Dominican held on to defeat the visiting Lumberjacks 72-70.
Julia Iman had a career night with her first double-double as a 'Jack with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Mariah Barraza added 13 points for the visitors with
Ashley Peralta and
Madison Parry each chipping in 11 points.
FIRST QUARTER: Dominican (2-1) took a 7-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game keyed by an old-fashioned three-point play by Jordan Charlton. A
Madison Parry jumper off a pass from
Julia Iman capped a 7-1 run by the 'Jacks to cut the hosts' lead to 9-8. The Penguins came right back and took a 15-10 lead with 1:40 left in the quarter on two free throws by Cam Figueroa. Dominican held on to that five-point lead, 18-13, heading into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER; HSU outscored the Penguins 5-0 in the first 90 seconds of the second quarter to cut the hosts' lead to 19-18. A three by

Julia Iman tied the game at 27-27 with 4:28 left in the half. A Camryn Figueroa lay-up with 2:38 on the clock gave Dominican a 33-29 lead. Once again, Humboldt State came right back and went on a 7-1 run capped by a three by
Samantha Caires off a pass from
Ashley Peralta to give the 'Jacks a 36-34 lead. Dominican finished the quarter on a mini 6-2 run to take a 40-38 lead into the locker room at the half.
THIRD QUARTER: Dominican started the third quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 46-38 lead in the first two minutes of the new stanza. A Riley Firauf free throw increased the Penguins' lead to 52-43 at the 4:09 mark of the third quarter.
Mariah Barraza's three off a pass from
Samantha Caires cut the Lumberjacks' deficit to 53-49, but two free throws by Jazmine Barnes gave Dominican a 54-49 heading into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: The hosts continued their surge from the third quarter and increased their lead to 58-49 on a lay-up by Jazmine Barnes just two minutes into the final fourth quarter. A

Julia Iman capped a 12-3 run by the 'Jacks to cut Humboldt State's deficit to 61-60 with 4:35 on the clock. Two made throws by Riley Friauf increased Dominican's lead to 69-61 with just 2:36 to go in regulation. Once again, HSU came back and went on a 7-2 run capped by a three by
Samantha Caires off a pass from
Madison Parry. A made free throw by Alaiayah San Juan gave the hosts a 72-68 lead on their next possession. HSU had a chance to cut into that lead, but its three-point field goal attempt fell short but the 'Jacks got the offensive board. Humboldt State's
Ashley Peralta was fouled with just a few ticks left on a three-point field goal attempt. Peralta went two-for-three form the line to make the final Dominican 72, Humboldt State 70.
FIRST DOUBLE-DOUBLE AS A 'JACK; Junior
Julia Iman recorded her first double-double with a career high 18 points and 15 rebounds in 33 minutes. Iman went seven-for-16 from the field including making a trey and three free throws. Iman dished out four assists and recorded a steal.
WON THE BATTLE OF THE BOARDS: Humboldt State (0-3) won the battle of the boards 41-40 paced by
Julia Iman's game-high 15 rebounds.
Citlaly Davalos added five rebounds with
Madison Parry and Madison Barraza each grabbing four.
DEFENSE: The 'Jacks forced 20 turnovers by the Penguins including 11 by steals. Three of those steals came from
Mariah Barraza with
Citlaly Davalos recording two. HSU held Dominican without a three-point field goal as the Penguins went 0-for-9 from beyond the arc.
THREE OTHERS IN DOUBLE DIGITS: Besides
Julia Iman's double-double, three other 'Jacks scored in double figures in
Mariah Barraza with a season high 13 points while
Ashley Peralta and
Madison Parry each added 11 points.
HOME OPENER; Humboldt State will have its home opener in ten days on Saturday, November 27, when the 'Jacks host Dominican at 2pm at Lumberjack Arena.
