'Jacks To Continue Three-Game Home Stand with CCAA Openers

Madison Parry and her Lumberjack Teammates Will Begin CCAA Play this Weekend at Lumberjack Arena
ARCATA, Calif---  Humboldt State women's basketball team will continue their three-game home stand this week hosting their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) openers this week.  The 'Jacks will entertain San Francisco State this Thursday, December 2 and Cal State Monterey Bay this Saturday, December 4. Tip-off for both games is set for 5:30pm in Lumberjack Arena. 
 
COACHING STAFF:  The 'Jacks are coached by sixth-year head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. Coach Bento-Jackson is 217-191 in her sixteen years as a head coach.  During those 16 years, she also has had four losing seasons including just one at Humboldt State. Prior to being the head coach at HSU, Bento-Jackson was the head coach at Santa Clara and Texas A&M-International.  She is assisted by Humboldt State Alum and former Lumberjack men's basketball player Guillermo Blas. 
 
LAST WEEK'S GAME: Humboldt State snapped its three-game losing streak with a 66-49 win over Dominican in the Lumberjacks' home opener this past Saturday.  The 'Jacks held the Penguins to just 27.9% shooting from the field including just 5.3% from three-point range.  Madison Parry paced HSU with her first double-double of the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds.  Kaz Parks chipped in 17 points to go with her nine rebounds and seven assists while Julia Iman scored 10 points.  The Lumberjacks' win was keyed by a 21-10 third quarter by HSU while holding the Penguins to just 14% shooting in the third quarter.  Dominican did not make one of its seven attempts from beyond the arc.    
 
UPDATE ON THE 'JACKS:  The Lumberjacks enter this week with a 1-3 overall record.  They are averaging 61.0 points per game while giving up 60.8 points per game.  HSU is being out-rebounded 38.5 to 36.0.  The 'Jacks are holding their opponents to just 15.2% shooting from three's while forcing 17.5 turnovers per game.  Madison Parry leads the team with her 14.3 scoring average, nine steals, three blocked shots and 78.6% shooting from the field.  Kaz Parks is averaging 11.7 points per game and has connected on a team best seven three-point field goal attempts and ta team high 38.9% of her attempts from beyond the arc.  Julia Iman is also averaging double digits with her 10.0 points per game average and leads the team with her 9.0 rebounding average.  Citlaly Davalos is shooting a team best 41.4% from the field and Ashley Parralta leads HSU with her 11 assists. 
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLES:  Two Lumberjacks have recorded double-doubles this season in Julia Iman and Madison Parry.  Iman scored 18 points and grabbed a season high 15 rebounds (10 defensive) for HSU against the Penguins on November 17 in 33 minutes. Parry scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds (10 defensive) for the 'Jacks in their 66-49 win over Dominican on November 27. 
 
CCAA/NCAA RANKINGS:  As a team, the Lumberjacks currently lead the nation in three-point field goal percentage defense allowing its opponents to just 15.2% shooting from beyond the arc.  In CCAA statistical rankings, three players are in the top 10 in eight categories and the 'Jacks are in the top ten in four team categories.  Madison Parry is seventh in the CCAA in rebounding (8.0 rebounds per game), free throw percentage (78.6%), steals per game (2.3) and blocked shots per game (0.8).  Kaz Parks is fourth in three-point field goal percentage (38.9%) and assist/turnover ratio (+2.0-) while she is fifth in three-point field goals made per game (2.3) and eighth in assists per game (3.3).  Julia Iman is fourth with her 9.0 rebounding average. 
 
REGION MATCH-UP  All four non-conference games for the 'Jacks were against NCAA Division II West Region opponents which are very important for rankings.  HSU lost its first two games of the season against two Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponents in Western Washington (68-56) and Seattle Pacific (54-52) in Seattle, Wash. The 'Jacks went 1-1 against Dominican, who is a member of the PacWest Conference.  They lost 72-70 in San Rafael to the Penguins and defeated them 66-49 in Arcata.  The CCAA, GNAC and PacWest Conferences are all members of the NCAA Division II West Region.

LACE UP FOR PEDIATRIC CANCER:  At both of the games this weekend, fans will also have the opportunity to purchase gold shoelaces for $5/pair to raise awareness for pediatric cancer and $4 goes directly to help the children they support.  This is put on by Go4TheGoal and Humboldt State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LUMBERJACK ARENA:  Humboldt State will host the 2021-22 CCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, March 3-5 at Lumberjack Arena.  The top six teams will receive a berth to the CCAA Championships.  March 3 will be the quarterfinal round with the top two seeds receiving a bye. The semi-final round games are set for March 4 with the championship game set for March 5.  The winner of the CCAA Championships will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Championships.

SAN FRANCISCO STATE:  The Gators enter Thursday's game with the 'Jacks with a 3-2 overall record including a 1-0 CCAA record.  They defeated Cal State Monterey Bay in both teams' CCAA openers this past Saturday in San Francisco, 64-45.  Prior to that game, SFSU defeated Dominican 76-74 also in San Francisco.  SF State is averaging 67.6 points per game while giving up 63.6 points per game. The Gators are being out-rebounded 39.8 to 39.4.  Mya Blake leads the way with her 14.4 scoring average followed by Ashley Hunt at 12.6 points per game and Taimans Lesa-Hardee at 11.0 points per game.  Hunt leads SFSU with her 57.8% shooting from the field and three blocked shots while Jolene Armendariz is averaging a team high 5.0 rebounds per game. Lesa-Hardee has made a team best nine three-point field goals, recorded a team high 12 steals and is shooting a team high 36% from beyond the arc.  Alexsandra Alvarardo leads SFSU with her 88.9% shooting from the line and 11 assists.

ALL-TIME SERIES (HSU vs. SFSU):  Humboldt State leads the all-time series with the Gators 22-4 including winning the last ten meetings in row.  HSU won 81-45 in San Francisco on Feb. 18, 2020 and 71-59 in Arcata on Dec. 12, 2019. 
 
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY:  The Otters enter their game at Sonoma State on Thursday with a 1-4 overall record and a 0-1 CCAA record.  CSUMB  lost 64-45 at San Francisco State this past Saturday in its CCAA opener.  Prior to that, the Otters won their first game 53-46 at Holy Names on November 23.  They are averaging 50.0 points per game while giving up 64.8 points per game.  Cal State Monterey Bay is out-rebounding its opponents 38.6 to 30.4.  Lauryn Baxter leads the team with her 15.0 scoring average and six steals.  Emily Perez is averaging 10.2 points per game while shooting a team leading 82.8% from the line. She also leads the team with her six steals and seven assists.  Rayshanti McNeal Price leads CSUMB with her 52.9% shooting from the field while Frances Potts has recorded a team leading two blocked shots.  Rebecca Castillo leads CSUMB with her 29% shooting from three's, five three-point field goals made and 7.0 rebounding average. 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES (HSU vs. CSUMB):  Humboldt State leads the all-time series with the Otters 17-11 including winning four the last five meetings. HSU split its two meetings with CSUMB in 2019-20. The 'Jacks won 81-55 on Jan. 15, 2020 in Arcata and lost 62-55 in Seaside on Dec. 7, 2019.
