ARCATA, Calif--- Humboldt State Lumberjacks will finish off the 2021 calendar year with two road games. HSU will be at Chico State this Saturday, December 18 and Sonoma State on Monday, December 20. Tip-off for both evenings is set for 5:30pm.
COACHING STAFF: The 'Jacks are coached by sixth-year head coach
Michelle Bento-Jackson. Coach Bento-Jackson is 219-192 in her sixteen years as a head coach. During those 16 years, she also has had four losing seasons including just one at Humboldt State. Prior to being the head coach at HSU, Bento-Jackson was the head coach at Santa Clara and Texas A&M-International. She is assisted by Humboldt State Alum and former Lumberjack men's basketball player Guillermo Blas.
LAST WEEK'S GAME: The Lumberjacks had their three-game winning streak snapped in a 51-46 loss at Stanislaus State on Saturday despite
Madison Parry and
Julia Iman posting double-doubles. Parry scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds while Iman scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. HSU held the Warriors to just 24.5% from the field including just 20% shooting form three-point land.
UPDATE ON THE 'JACKS: The Lumberjacks enter their final two games of the 2021 calendar year with a 3-5 overall record and a 2-1 CCAA record. They are 59.0 points per game while giving up 58.4 points per game. HSU is being out-rebounded 38.9 to 37.3 while holding its opponents to just 23.3% shooting from three-point land. The 'Jacks are forcing 16.9 turnovers per game. Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in
Madison Parry (13.9 ppg),
Julia Iman (13.7 ppg) and
Kaz Parks (10.5 ppg). Iman leads the team with her 9.1 rebounding average, 41.3% shooting from the field, and 14 steals. She is tied with
Ashley Peralta for the team lead with 20 assists. Parry has blocked a team high five shots while connecting on a team leading 72.4% of her attempts from the line. Parks leads HSU with her 14 three-point field goals made and 30.4% shooting from three-point land.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Two Lumberjacks have recorded double-doubles this season in
Julia Iman and
Madison Parry. Iman scored 18 points and grabbed a season high 15 rebounds (10 defensive) for HSU against the Penguins on November 17 in 33 minutes. She recorded her second double-double in HSU's win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Dec. 4 with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Her third double-double came this past weekend at Stanislaus State (11 points and 10 rebounds). Parry scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds (10 defensive) for the 'Jacks in their 66-49 win over Dominican on November 27. She recently recorded her second double-double at Stanislaus State (14 points and 14 rebounds).
CCAA/NCAA RANKINGS: As a team, the Lumberjacks is second in three-point field goal percentage defense (23.3%) and is third in scoring defense (58.4 ppg), field goal percentage defense (36.7%) and scoring defense (58.4 ppg). They are sixth in scoring margin (+0.6). As a team, four players are amongst the leaders in ten statistical categories.
Madison Parry is sixth in rebounding (8.1 rpg), eighth in blocked shots per game (0.7) and tenth in scoring (13.9 ppg) and free throw percentage (72.4%).
Julia Iman is second in rebounding (9.1 rpg), sixth in field goal percentage (41.3%), eighth in steals per game (2.0) and tied for ninth in assists per game (2.9).
Kaz Parks is eighth in three-point field goal percentage (30.4%) and
Ashley Peralta is tied for ninth in assists per game (2.9). As a team, the 'Jacks are 25
th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage defense.
REGION MATCH-UP All four non-conference games for the 'Jacks were against NCAA Division II West Region opponents which are very important for rankings. HSU lost its first two games of the season against two Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponents in Western Washington (68-56) and Seattle Pacific (54-52) in Seattle, Wash. The 'Jacks went 1-1 against Dominican, who is a member of the PacWest Conference. They lost 72-70 in San Rafael to the Penguins and defeated them 66-49 in Arcata. The CCAA, GNAC and PacWest Conferences are all members of the NCAA Division II West Region.
CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LUMBERJACK ARENA: Humboldt State will host the 2021-22 CCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, March 3-5 at Lumberjack Arena. The top six teams will receive a berth to the CCAA Championships. March 3 will be the quarterfinal round with the top two seeds receiving a bye. The semi-final round games are set for March 4 with the championship game set for March 5. The winner of the CCAA Championships will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Championships.
CHICO STATE: The Wildcats are 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the CCAA. They have not played since Dec. 4 when they beat Cal Poly Pomona 67-63 in Pomona to snap a four-game losing streak. Chico State is averaging 68.3 points per game while giving up 62.0 points per game. The Wildcats are being out-rebounded 40.6 to 36.6. Three Wildcats are averaging double digits in scoring in Charity Gallegos (11.8 ppg), Myli Martinez (10.4 ppg) and Bailey Jones (10.0 ppg). Gallegos leads the team with her 20 steals, 41 assists and 89.5% shooting from the line. Jordan Morris is shooting a team high 47.9% from the field while Bailey Jones has made a team leading 16 threes. Morgan Mathis leads the team with her 43.5% shooting from three-point land while Morris is averaging a team high 5.6 rebounds per game.
ALL-TIME SERIES (HSU vs. CHICO STATE): The Wildcats lead the all-time series with Humboldt State 72-28. Chico State won both meetings in 2019-20, 60-51 in Chico on Dec. 21, 2019 and 70-67 in Arcata on Feb. 27, 2020. The last 'Jack win was 76-72 in Chico on Feb. 2, 2019.
SONOMA STATE: The Seawolves are 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA. They have not played since their 61-55 loss at home against SF State on Dec. 4. Sonoma State is averaging 56.9 points per game while giving up 62.3 points per game. The Seawolves are out-rebounding their opponents 38.6 to 33. Taylor Johnson leads the Seawolves with her 8.3 points per game average followed by Zane Sheckherd at 7.6 ppg and Amanda Luckett at 7.2 ppg. Luckett leads the team with her 6.0 rebounding average and seven blocked shots. Alli McDonald is shooting a team high 51.3% from the field while Johnson has made a team high 14 threes. Camille Johnson leads the team with her 85.7% shooting from the line. Sheckherd has a team leading 11 assists. Jayme Blackard has recorded a team high 12 steals and Lockett has blocked a team high seven shots.
ALL-TIME SERIES (HSU vs. SONOMA STATE): Humboldt State leads the all-time series with the Seawolves 39-38. The 'Jacks have won five of the last six meetings including both in 2019-20. HSU won 64-58 in Arcata on Nov. 21, 2019 and 74-73 in Rohnert Park on Feb. 15, 2020 on Molly Dixon's game-winner at the buzzer.
