Lumberjacks Take Series from MSUB After Doubleheader Sweep

BILLINGS, Mont.---   After sweeping today's doubleheader from Montana State Billings 6-5 and 9-2 this afternoon in Billings, Mont., the Humboldt State Lumberjacks took the weekend series from the Yellowjackets 3-1.  In the final three games of the series, Humboldt State outscored the Yellowjackets 22-11.  Izzy Starr's two-run home capped HSU's 6-5 game one today while in the night cap, she went two-for-three with two runs batted in including a solo home run to key the 'Jacks 9-2 win.

GAME ONE:  JoAna Mullins' two-out single drove in Danica Grier in HSU's half of the first to give the Lumberjacks an 1-0 early lead.  The Yellowjacks scored four runs in their half of the first capped by a two-run home run by Brie Frazier to take a 4-1 lead over the Lumberjacks.

HSU cut into the deficit, 4-2, on a Grier two-out run scoring single which brought in Katelyn Dendas in the top of the second inning.  Dendas reached on a one-out single and later scored on Grier's single after singles by Jenna Sobrero and Emily McAdams.

The game remained 4-2 MSUB until the Lumberjack half of the fifth. Sobrero reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a two-out triple by Micaela Harris. Still with two outs, Harris scored the tying run when McAdams reached on an error by the Yellowjackets.

MSUB retook the lead on a solo home run by Hailee Gregerson in its half of the fifth, 5-4.

The guests took the lead for the first time of the game with a two-run sixth inning.  Haley Suter walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mullins. She scored on Starr's two-run home run over the  right-field fence to give the Lumberjacks the 6-5 lead.

The Yellowjackets had a chance to tie the game in their final at bat.  Frazier reached base on a two-out error by the Lumberjacks.  McAdams induced the final out of the game to ground out to Starr at third to preserve the 6-5 HSU come-from-behind win.

McAdams (1-1) picked up the win, pitching seven innings, giving up five hits and four runs while striking out three and walking two.  Dendas had three of HSU's 11 hits while Grier had two with Starr driving in two of the Lumberjacks' six runs.

GAME TWO:  Once again the night-cap, HSU took an early 1-0 lead. Harris had a lead-off single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. She scored on a McAdams' single through the right side.

The Lumberjacks broke the game open with a five-run third inning.  Harris had a lead-off home run to double HSU's lead to 2-0.  With one out, Grier doubled and scored on a two-out single by Starr.  Dendas hit a single to right field to place Lumberjacks on the corners.  Vanessa Saltos, with the count, 1-0, hit a three-run home run over the center field fence to increase the Lumberjack lead to 6-0.

Starr hit her second home run of the game with two outs in the top of the fifth to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.  They added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Saltos had a lead-off double, went to third on a pinch-hit one-out single by Kristin Ingram. They both scored on a two-out double by McAdams as HSU took a 9-0 lead heading in the final inning and a half.

HSU starter, Karen Di Dio, gave up her first two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run home run by Allie Hughes to decrease the Lumberjack lead to 9-2.   The Yellowjackets had a chance cut the deficit more in their last at bat.  With two outs, Taylor Anderson and Sydney Norwood had back to back singles, but Di Dio induced the final batter to fly out to Harris in left field to preserve the 9-2 HSU victory.

Di Dio (2-0) recorded her second consecutive complete game win in the series finale. She gave up seven hits and two runs while striking out two and walking two.  Four HSU batters had two hits apiece in Harris, McAdams, Starr and Saltos. McAdams and Saltos each drove in three runs.  Three Lumberjacks cross home plate twice in Harris, Starr and Saltos.

The Lumberjacks and Saints will face each other on Tuesday, March 30 in a 2pm (MT) doubleheader. The series will conclude on Wednesday, March 31 with a 1pm (MT) starting doubleheader.
