Southern Oregon Rallies to Defeat Lumberjacks

ASHLAND, Ore.---  Southern Oregon scored two unanswered goals mid-way through the second half to key their 2-1 come-from-behind win over the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks.  This was the Lumberjacks' first loss this spring season.  Thomas Augee connected on Humboldt State's goal in the 63rd minute off a ball from Yushi Katu.

"Today was another typical battle of a game at Southern Oregon," said head coach Fred Jungemann.  "It's always an amazing competitive atmosphere and spirit from both teams."

The two goals were the first time since the 22nd minute of HSU's match at Dominican on March 21 that the Lumberjacks' opponents have scored a goal against the 'Jacks.  This was a span of 312 minutes.

Southern Oregon (4-1) had the first chance of the match to take a 1-0 lead in just the 44 second, when the Lumberjacks' Adrian Gallardo stopped Joao Santos' shot on goal attempt.  Humboldt State had its chance to take the lead be blocked by the Raiders' defense in the 18th minute off the foot of Jordan Bruton.  HSU had another chance to take the lead in the 30th minute, but Gou Nitta's shot hit the post.  The score remained scoreless heading into the half.

The Lumberjacks came out strong in the second half.  They had two chances in the 52nd minute to take the lead, but Liam Kalhagen stopped Dylan Tovani and Augee's attempts.  The guests had another chance go wide in the 61st minute off the foot of Daniel Adeyeye.  The 'Jacks took the 1-0 lead two minutes later as Augee connected on a missed shot by Katu.

HSU didn't hold on to the lead that long as the 'Jacks were called for a yellow card in the 64th minute and the Raiders' Alan Gaytan made the visitors pay as he connected on the penalty kick.  Five minutes later, Southern Oregon took the 2-1 lead on a goal by Noah Addie off a ball from Moises Hernandez.

Marcus Abdel-Malek had a chance to tie the match at 2-2 in the 73rd minute, but his shot attempt went wide.  He had another chance to tie the match in the 87th minute, but his attempt hit the post.  The 'Jacks kept its attack going as in the 88th minute, Christian Gonzalez saw his shot on goal attempt be stopped by the Raiders' Kalhagen. They had one more chance with 20 seconds left in regulation, but once again Abdel-Malek's attempt sailed high over the goal.

Gallardo and Jacob Cotton each played a half in goal for the 'Jacks with them combining for two saves.

"We suffered today from a lack of depth due to several injuries," added Jungemann.  Our guys played well considering, but SOU deserved to win a game where both teams played well and had good chances to claim a result.  In the end, these two games have been great learning opportunities for our young team and we have plenty of positives to take away."

This evening's match was a part of a two-match championship league series between the Lumberjacks with each team winning a match.  HSU's won on Friday evening 1-0 in Ashland with the Raiders winning 2-1 this evening.  The two teams had a penalty kick round with the Lumberjacks taking that 6-5.

Humboldt State will continue its four-match road trip this Wednesday, April 21 at 1pm in Atherton, Calif., for a match with Menlo College.
