Lumberjack Men’s Soccer To Begin Season This Labor Day Weekend in Utah

ARCATA, Calif---  Humboldt State men's soccer team will begin their 2021 regular season this Labor Day weekend for a pair of non-conference matches in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Lumberjacks will face the host school, Westminster (Utah), this Thursday, September 2 at 7:30pm MT.  They will finish off their trip in Utah with a 4:30pm MT starting match on Saturday, September 4 against Northwest Nazarene.
 
COACHING STAFF:  Coach Fred Jungemann begins his ninth year on the sideline for the Lumberjacks.  This year, Coach Jungemann's assistants are three former Lumberjacks in Frankie Calderon, Phil Rouse and Isaiah Dairo who will begin their first year on the Lumberjack coaching staff. 
 
JUST TWO SENIORS:  This year's team is led by a pair of seniors in Marco Silveira and Yushi Kato.  Silveira paced the 'Jacks with his 11 assists in the 2019 season.  His 11 assists were the eighth most in the nation in NCAA Division II while his 0.65 assists per game average was the fourth best in Division II.  Kato transferred to HSU in the Spring of 2020 and was a starter on the 2020-21 squad during the pandemic year.
 
RETURNING ALL-CCAA:  Devin Hauenstein was named to the 2019 All-CCAA Team.  He scored three goals and had five assists during the '19 campaign.  Also returning from the 2019 season besides Hauenstein and Silveira are Motoki Sato, Dylan Tovani, Cole Falco and Jordon Bruton.
 
11 NEWCOMERS:  Coach Jungemann has 11 freshmen on this year's team in Solomon Baxter, Sam Daitch, Nathan Epps, Slater Hammer, Oliver Horgan, Nicholas Ingrande, Nicolas Roberto Herrera Land, Diego Ramos, Ramiro Rosas, Milan Uncanin and Sage Urbaez
 
4-1-1 In 2020-21:  Humboldt State went 4-1-1 in its six matches during the pandemic year.  Daniel Adeyeye paced HSU with his two goals and one assists while Sato and Edgar Castanedia each scored two goals.  Kato had a team leading two assists.
 
LAST YEAR IN GOAL:  During the pandemic year, the Lumberjacks' duo of Adrian Gallardo and Jacob Cotton shared time in goal.  The duo allowed just three goals in the Lumberjacks' six matches while posting five shutouts.
 
SCHOLARS OFF THE PITCH:  The Lumberjacks posted their highest term GPA in ten years this past semester with a 3.46 grade point average.  Thirteen players were named CCAA All-Academic honorees last academic year while nine were named D2ADA Academic Achievement honorees.  They also had thirteen players named to the CCAA Fall All-Academic Team.  Motoki Sato was named the CCAA Men's Soccer Championship Scholar Athlete in the fall.  In the spring, Dylan Tovani and Devin Hauenstein were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.

WESTMINSTER GRIFFINS:  Westminster is coming off a 3-3-1 season in 2020-21 in which Max Bingman led the way with his two goals.  Bingman was named to the All-RMAC Second Team for his performance.  Ian Rose posted a 0.67 goals against average in goal with a .846 saves percentage while Noah Larkin had a 1.14 goals against average with a .815 saves percentage.  In 2019, the Griffins went 10-7-2 including 7-4-2 in the RMAC.  The all-time series between the two teams is tied at 1-1.  Westminster won the first meeting 3-0 back in 1992 while HSU won 5-0 in Nampa, Idaho, in 2000.
 
NORTHWEST NAZARENE NIGHTHAWKS:  The Nighthawks went 4-2-1 during the 2020-21 season.  Lorenzo Valentini, Brandon Parsio and Jake Levine each scored three goals for NNU.  Sawyer Price posted a 1.32 goals against average with a .700 saves percentage.  In 2019, the Nighthawks went 7-11 and 3-9 in the GNAC.  Levine had a team leading nine goals and assisted on three goals.  He was named to the All-GNAC Team.  Price had a 2.40 goals against average in goal for NNU while Alex Nadarmann had a 1.51 goals against average.  This is the first ever meeting between the 'Jacks and Nighthawks.
 
UP NEXT FOR HSU:  Humboldt State will continue on the road next week for a pair of matches in Hayward, Calif., on the campus of Cal State East Bay.  The 'Jacks will face Hawai'i Pacific and Holy Names on September 10 and 12.
 
HOME OPENER:  Humboldt State's home opener is set for Friday, September 17 at 3pm when the 'Jacks
