ARCATA, Calif--- The score doesn't show the full story of this evening's Humboldt State volleyball match with the visiting San Francisco State Gators (11-1, 4-1 CCAA). The Lumberjacks fell in three sets to the Gators (27-25, 25-18, 25-22) and were led by
Lindsey McLaughlin's nine kills,
Riley Tishlarich's 16 assists and
Kaitlyn Patterson's 16 digs.
FIRST SET: The first set was even until the Lumberjacks jumped out to a 20-19 lead on a kill by
Elyse McKinney off an assist from
Riley Tishlarich. Humboldt State (3-6, 1-4 CCAA) increased its lead to 24-22 on a kill by
Lindsey McLaughlin on another assist from Tishlarich. The Gators tied the set at 25-25 on a kill by Alhana Velazquez. The visitors scored the next two points to take the set 27-25 and to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
SECOND SET: SF State jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the second set capped by a Jessica Haynie kill. The 'Jacks didn't go away as they tied the match at 11-11 on a kill by
Anna Hospodar. A kill by Kimberly DeBoer gave SF State a 21-15 lead. A kill by McLaulghlin cut the Gator lead to 21-16, but SF State finished the set off scoring four of the final six points to take the set 25-18 and to take a 2-0 lead.
THIRD SET: Once again, the third set was evenly played until SF State took a 16-15 lead on a kill by
Hannah Cantrell. The Gators came right back and took a 21-17 lead. A service error by the Gators cut their lead to 22-21, but they finished the set off taking three of the final four points to take the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.
LEADERS: Lindsey McLaughlin had nine kills to lead Humboldt State followed by
Nora Thompson and
Hannah Cantrell each with seven.
Riley Tishlarich had 16 assists and
Riley White added 11. Leading the way for HSU with her two service aces was Thompson while McLaughlin and Cantrell had a team high two total blocks.
Kaitlyn Patterson paced HSU with 21 digs and Thompson added 11.
SATURDAY CANCELED: This Saturday's scheduled Volleyball match with Cal State Monterey Bay has been canceled due to COVID-19-related health issues within the CSUMB volleyball program. HSU athletics programs continue COVID-19 testing and contact tracing protocols, and Lumberjack Athletics is appreciative of CSUMB's program for their diligence and quick response to ensure the safety of both programs' coaches, student-athletes and staff.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will return to the court on Thursday, October 7 as the Lumberjacks will face Cal State San Marcos in a CCAA match in San Marcos, Calif., at 7pm.
