ARCATA, Calif.--- Juan Perez scored his team high eighth goal of the season off a ball from Edgar Castaneda to help the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks blank the visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Otters 1-0 at College Creek Field this afternoon. Sean Tucker and Edgar Gonzalez also had shot attempts for the Jacks while Adrian Gallardo recorded four saves. The win moves the Jacks three points closer towards a spot in the upcoming CCAA Playoffs with only two games remaining in the regular season.
The Otters outshot the Jacks 10-4 while also carrying an advantage in corner kicks, 7-2. Cal State Monterey Bay out-fouled Humboldt 19-13 in a game that saw a total of five yellow cards and a red card. Perez's eighth goal of the season currently places him second in the conference in total goals scored.
Today's win gives the Jacks three crucial points to keep the squad in the hunt for one of six CCAA playoff positions. The team currently sits tied for eighth place with Cal State East Bay, one point behind seventh place Sonoma State and two points behind Cal State San Marcos, who currently holds the sixth and final playoff position.
Humboldt (3-6-7, 2-4-3 CCAA) faces off against no. 10 Cal State Dominguez Hills (11-0-5, 5-0-4 CCAA) on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 2pm at College Creek Field. The Jacks will honor the team's 10 seniors as part of the Senior Day festivities
