Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Two Jacks Score 18 Points In Season Opener Versus Western Oregon

LACEY, Wash. -- The Cal Poly Humboldt women's basketball team opened their season Saturday afternoon versus the Wolves of Western Oregon University at the SMU Classic. The Lumberjacks dropped the non-conference matchup to Western Oregon with a final score of 75-69. Madison Parry and Zyan Smith each scored 18 points in the contest.

GAME SUMMARY
Humboldt came out hot in the first quarter, shooting 58 percent from the field and 57 percent from three point range while possessing an early 23-15 lead heading into the second quarter. Western Oregon responded in the second quarter by outscoring the Jacks 22-11 on 62 percent shooting. Humboldt found themselves down at halftime 37-34 to the Wolves.

The Jacks had their best defensive quarter in the third, holding Western Oregon to just 13 points. Headed into the fourth quarter tied at 50, Humboldt took a four point lead after back-to-back shots from Madison Parry with six minutes to go. The Wolves answered back with a 12-1 run of their own and took a 71-64 lead with under two minutes to go. Humboldt cut the Western Oregon lead to three after a pair of free throws from Jaydon Williams, making it 72-69. The Jacks couldn't catch the Wolves as time expired, resulting in a 75-69 loss.

POST GAME QUOTE
"Today was an eye opener in many aspects," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "Our defense has a long way to go. Between the number of defensive errors, offensive boards we gave up, and not coming up with the 50/50 balls, we made it very difficult to win the game. Zyan and Madison were a big spark offensively. I thought they both played with great effort throughout the game. We must learn, regroup, and come back tomorrow with much greater intensity."

NOTABLE STATS
- Zyan Smith posted 18 points on 7-9 shooting and 75 percent from three point range. She also collected three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
- Madison Parry also notched 18 points on 5-11 shooting and led the team with five rebounds.
