ARCATA, Calif.--- Cal Poly Humboldt's Social Equity & Accountability (SEA) Committee recently announced the recipients of their annual scholarship. This year's scholarship recipients are Niki Clark from women's soccer and Devin Hauenstein from men's soccer.
"Thank you for naming me as a recipient of the second annual Social Equity and Accountability (SEA) scholarship," Hauenstein said. "I am humbled and honored to learn that I was selected."
The scholarship, initially funded by a generous donation from the Arcata Sunrise Rotary and supported today by members of the community, was created with the intention of making athletes think critically about their positions as leaders in the campus and local communities, while also awarding scholarship money to help ease financial burden so they can best pursue their athletic and academic endeavors on campus.
"By awarding me this scholarship you have helped lighten my financial burden which allows me to focus on my academics and athletics while identifying opportunities to support the Humboldt community," Hauenstein said. "I am pursuing my master's degree in Kinesiology while playing soccer for HSU this fall. The end goal is to become a Physical Therapist. With your generous support I will be the first person in my family to pursue a master's degree. My educational pursuits would not be possible without the generous support of scholarship sponsors."
"As a mixed raced athlete I hope to do what I can to make the team environment as inclusive as possible," said Clark. " I am very grateful to receive this scholarship and also help be a part in continuing to make Cal Poly Humboldt athletics great!"
Applicants must be a student-athlete on an active/official Cal Poly Humboldt NCAA Division II athletic team roster at the time of application and must be eligible to compete in the upcoming academic year to receive this award. They were asked to submit a personal statement addressing the following: What does social, equity and accountability mean to you? How do you demonstrate these principles in your athletic and academic pursuits? How do they inform your leadership in these domains and beyond?
The two winners were chosen by the SEA Committee. For more information on SEA go to www.humboldtathletics.com/sea. If you would like to help support this scholarship fund, please visit https://giving.humboldt.edu/jacks-social-equity-accountability-sea-scholarship-fund.
