‘Jacks Return to the Road for the Final Time This Weekend in Southern California

AJ Sims and his teammates will be at Pomona and SB this Weekend
ARCATA, Calif--- Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks men's basketball team will travel to Southern California for their final road trip of the regular season. The 'Jacks will be in Pomona when they face the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos on Thursday, February 17.  They will be in San Bernardino on Saturday, February 19 when they face Cal State San Bernardino.  Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:30pm. 

COACHING STAFF:  The 'Jacks are coached by second-year head coach Tae Norwood.  Coach Norwood has a .563 winning percentage during his three years as a head coach. Norwood led the 'Jacks to a 4-5 record during the pandemic season.  He came to Humboldt State from Florida, where he guided Keiser University to a 23-7 record during the 2019-20 season including a share of the conference regular season title.  Keiser also appeared in the NAIA Tournament. 
 
On his staff are Andy Harre (first year), HSU Alum and former men's basketball player Colin Caslick (third season) along with volunteers Jason Hodges and Baron Parks. 

RECAP OF THE LUMBERJACKS' LAST GAMES:  Humboldt went 0-2 last weekend in its two home games.  The 'Jacks started the week with a 68-65 overtime loss to Cal State Dominguez hills. Jaden Edwards led the way for the 'Jacks with his 18 points and 13 rebounds while Amari Green chipped in 12 points.  They finished the weekend with an 86-84 triple overtime loss to Cal State East Bay on Saturday.  Edwards led Humboldt with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Green added 13 points and Bryce Mitchell chipped in 13 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. 
 
UPDATE ON THE LUMBERJACKS: Cal Poly Humboldt is 10-12 overall and 4-12 in the CCAA.  The 'Jacks are averaging 68.4 points per game while giving up 70.9 points per game. They are out-rebounding their opponents 37.9 to 35.8.  Jaden Edwards leads the way for the 'Jacks with his 16.4 scoring, 9.8 rebounding average, 23 steals and 32.8% shooting from three-point land.  Amari Green has dished out a team leading 58 assists and shooting a team high 77.3% from the line.  Cam Timmons leads the team with his 15 blocked shots and 53.4% shooting from the field. 

STILL ALIVE FOR THE CCAA BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS:  Heading into the final four games of the regular season, Cal Poly Humboldt is still alive for the CCAA Basketball Championships March 3-5.  The championships will be hosted by Humboldt in Lumberjack Arena. The 'Jacks are four game out of the sixth and final spot. Humboldt is in eleventh place with its 4-12 CCAA record.  The top six teams heading into this week's games are 1.) Cal State San Bernardino (12-2), 2.) Chico State (11-3); 3.) Cal State Monterey Bay (11-3); 4.) Cal State San Marcos (10-3), 5.) Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-5); and 6.) San Francisco State (8-8).
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: In his first season as a 'Jack, Jaden Edwards has recorded eleven double-doubles this season. Edwards' first two came in HSU's first two games versus Western Washington (16 points/14 rebounds) and Simon Fraser (15 points/10 rebounds).  On Dec. 2 and Dec. 4, Edwards had an 11 points/11 rebound performance against SF State and a 19 points/12 rebounds effort against CSU Monterey Bay. Edwards' fourth double-double came on December 9 against Simpson in which he scored 41 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  He then scored 13 points and grabbed 17 rebounds at Stanislaus State (Dec. 11). Edwards' last two double-doubles came on January 20 and 22 at Cal State East Bay (17 points, 11 rebounds) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (13 points, 12 rebounds).  Edwards recorded his ninth double-double on January 27 with an 11-point, 10-rebound performance against Chico State. His last two came this weekend  18 points, 13 rebounds vs. Cal State Dominguez Hills and 26 points, 14 rebounds vs. Cal State East Bay.  Cam Timmons recorded his first double-double on January 2 with an 18-point, 10-rebound performance against Sonoma State.  Bryce Mitchell posted his first double-double on February 5 at SF State with a 10-point, 11-rebound performance.  Mitchell's second came on Saturday with a 13-point, 14-rebound performance.
 
CCAA/NCAA RANKINGS: In the latest CCAA team statistical rankings, the 'Jacks are fourth in rebounding margin and sixth in combined rebounds.  Jaden Edwards is second in rebounding, third in scoring and fourth in field goal percentage. 
 
6-0 NON-CONFERENCE (4-0 AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE NCAA DII WEST REGION FOES):
  Four of HSU's six non-conference games were all NCAA Division II West Region games.  HSU started the season with two important wins over Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponents in Western Washington (70-69) and Simon Fraser (63-59) in Carson, California.  The 'Jacks also defeated Western Oregon, 75-67, from the GNAC and Dominican, 74-68, from the PacWest Conference.  HSU's other non-conference victories were an 81-78 over Lincoln and an 85-68 win over Simpson.  The CCAA, GNAC and PacWest Conferences are all members of the NCAA Division II West Region.
 
CAL POLY POMONA: The Broncos are 9-8 overall and 5-8 in the CCAA after going 1-1 in their last two games. Cal Poly Pomona lost 65-61 at Stanislaus State on February 5 and defeated Cal State Los Angeles 78-60 on February 10.  They are averaging 68.5 points per game while giving up 65.1 points per game. CPP is out-rebounding its opponents 38.8 to 34.4.  Phoenix Shackleford leads the way with his 16.5 scoring average followed by Dane Erikstrup  at 11.7 and Christopher Mitchell at 10.3.  Shackleford leads the team with his 60 assists and 34 steals.  Tavian Henderson is shooting a team leading 58.2% from the field and averaging a team high 7.9 rebounds per game.  Shackleford has made a team high 30 three-point field goals.  Erikstrup is shooting a team leading 40% from three-point land and 81% from the line while blocking a team high 10 shots. 

ALL-TIME SERIES (Humboldt vs. POMONA):  Pomona leads the all-time series 20-11 including winning 87-67 in Arcata on January 15.  The Broncos have won the last five meetings between the two teams.  The Lumberjacks last defeated the Broncos 70-65 on Dec. 31, 2018 in Pomona behind Jackson Strong's 25 points.  Amari Green had three points in that win for the 'Jacks.
 
LAST TIME:  Humboldt lost 87-67 to Cal Poly Pomona on January 15.  Phoenix Shackleford paced the Broncos with 23 points.  Jaden Edwards led the 'Jacks with 22 points while AJ Sims had 13 points and Cam Timmons chipped in 10 points. 
 
CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO:  Entering their game on Thursday night versus Sonoma State, the nationally ranked Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes are 18-2 overall and 12-2 in the CCAA. They have won 12 of their 13 games including 95-84 at Cal State Los Angeles this Saturday.  The Coyotes are averaging 85.7 points per game while giving up 71.8 points per game. They are out-rebounding their opponents 43.4 to 33.1.  Four players are averaging double digits in scoring in Brandon Knapper (19.5 ppg), Darius Mickens (14.5 ppg), Daytone Jennings (14.1 ppg) and Eddie Davis (11.8 ppg).  Knapper leads the team with his 53 made three-point field goal and 79.2% shooting from the line.  Mickens has made a team high 62.6% of his attempts from the field including a team high 47.4% of his attempts beyond the arc.  He has blocked a team high 11 shots and recorded a team high 38 steals.  Darius Lubom has dished out a team high 91 assists.

ALL-TIME SERIES (Humboldt vs. CSUSB):  Cal State San Bernardino leads the all-time series 16-13 including winning five of the last six meetings.  The 'Yotes won 83-62 in Arcata on January 13.  The last win for the 'Jacks was 53-49 in Arcata on Feb. 13, 2019.  Their last win in San Bernardino was 88-81 on Feb. 17, 2017 with Nikhil Lizzotti leading the way with 26 points.
 
LAST TIME:  Humboldt lost 83-62 to Cal State San Bernardino on Jan. 13 in Arcata. Darius Mickens paced CSUSB with 22 points and 12 rebounds.  Bryce Mitchell paced Humboldt with 14 points while AJ Sims added 12 points.

CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LUMBERJACK ARENA:  Humboldt State will host the 2021-22 CCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, March 3-5 at Lumberjack Arena.  The top six teams will receive a berth to the CCAA Championships.  March 3 will be the quarterfinal round with the top two seeds receiving a bye. The semi-final round games are set for March 4 with the championship game set for March 5.  The winner of the CCAA Championships will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Championships.
