ARCATA, Calif--- Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjack women's basketball team will host Cal State Los Angeles and nationally ranked Cal State San Marcos in their final games of the 2021-22 regular season this weekend. The 'Jacks will host Cal State Los Angeles this Thursday, February 24 on Black Out Night. They will finish out the 2021-22 campaign this Saturday, February 26 when they host No. 24 Cal State San Marcos on Senior Night. Both games are scheduled to start at 5:30pm.
COACHING STAFF: The 'Jacks are coached by sixth-year head coach
Michelle Bento-Jackson. Coach Bento-Jackson is 223-202 in her sixteen years as a head coach. During those 16 years, she also has had four losing seasons including just one at Humboldt State. Prior to being the head coach at HSU, Bento-Jackson was the head coach at Santa Clara and Texas A&M-International. She is assisted by Humboldt State Alum and former Lumberjack men's basketball player Guillermo Blas.
LAST TIME ON THE COURT: Cal Poly Humboldt lost both games last weekend on the road in Southern California. The 'Jacks lost 68-57 at Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday.
Madison Parry recorded her eighth double-double with 23 points and 13 points.
Citlaly Davalos added 15 points for the 'Jacks. Humboldt lost 59-56 at Cal State San Bernardino despite Parry's 21 points.
Kaz Parks chipped in 16 points for Cal Poly Humboldt.
UPDATE ON THE 'JACKS: Cal Poly Humboldt enters this weekend with a 7-14 overall record and a 6-11 CCAA record. The 'Jacks are averaging 61.1 points per game while giving up 63.1 points per game. They are being out-rebounded 38.4 to 36.2. Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in
Madison Parry (16.1 ppg),
Julia Iman (14.9 ppg) and
Kaz Parks (10.4 ppg). Parry leads the way for the 'Jacks with her 46.4% shooting from the field, 76.3% shooting from the line, 20 blocked shots and 25 steals. Iman is averaging a team leading 9.4 rebounds per game with
Ashley Peralta leading the way with 63 assists. Parks leads the team with her 47 three-point field goals made and 34.8% shooting from three-point land.
BLACK OUT NIGHT THIS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24 IN LUMBERJACK ARENA: This Thursday, February 24 when the Cal Poly Humboldt men's and women's basketball teams host Cal State Los Angeles in conference doubleheader will be Black Out Night in recognition of Black History Month. Come and get pumped up with members of the UMQUA Center for Pan-African Excellence in the Redwood Bowl prior to the games. The pre-game rally will start at 4pm. Create a sign take into the game, listen to some music and create a lasting memory at the photo booth and enjoy a Down South style dinner. Everyone will receive a FREE special edition Black Out Game t-shirt to wear at the game.
SENIOR NIGHT: Prior to the game on Saturday, Humboldt will recognize its lone senior in Sharon Roldan. Roldan is a senior transfer from Notre Dame de Namur University. She has started in 10 of the 21 games she has played in this season while recording one double-double.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Five Lumberjacks have recorded double-doubles this season in
Julia Iman,
Madison Parry,
Sharon Roldan,
Jadence Clifton and
Citlaly Davalos. Parry has eight double-doubles while Iman has five double-doubles while Roldan, Clifton and Davalos each have one.
CCAA RANKINGS: In the recent CCAA statistics report, Cal Poly Humboldt is in the top six in six categories. They are fourth in free throw percentage, fifth in three-point field goal percentage defense and assist/turnover ratio and sixth in scoring defense and assists. Three players are in the top ten in nine categories.
Madison Parry is first in scoring, second in rebounding, third in field goal percentage, fourth in blocked shots and fifth in free throw percentage.
Kaz Parks is fourth in three-point field goal percentage and three-point field goals made per game while
Ashley Peralta is seventh in assist/turnover ratio and eighth in assists.
REGION MATCH-UP: All four non-conference games for the 'Jacks were against NCAA Division II West Region opponents which are very important for rankings. HSU lost its first two games of the season against two Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponents in Western Washington (68-56) and Seattle Pacific (54-52) in Seattle, Wash. The 'Jacks went 1-1 against Dominican, who is a member of the PacWest Conference. They lost 72-70 in San Rafael to the Penguins and defeated them 66-49 in Arcata. The CCAA, GNAC and PacWest Conferences are all members of the NCAA Division II West Region.
CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LUMBERJACK ARENA: Humboldt State will host the 2021-22 CCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, March 3-5 at Lumberjack Arena. The top six teams will receive a berth to the CCAA Championships. March 3 will be the quarterfinal round with the top two seeds receiving a bye. The semi-final round games are set for March 4 with the championship game set for March 5. The winner of the CCAA Championships will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Championships.
CAL STATE LOS ANGELES: The Golden Eagles are 12-11 overall and 11-6 in the CCAA after going 2-0 last weekend at home. They defeated Chico State (72-52) and Stanislaus State (78-69). CSULA is averaging 69.4 points per game while giving up 67.6 points per game. The Golden Eagles are out-rebounding their opponents 41.9 to 39.0. Three players are averaging double figures in scoring in Nicole Flennaugh (15.9 ppg), Lily Buggs (14.7 ppg) and Anai Washington (11.2 ppg). Jada Johnson leads the way with her 10.4 rebounding average and 23 blocks. Washington is shooting a team high 52.2% from the field while Buggs has recorded a team high 39 steals. Flennaugh leads the team with her 79 three-point field goals made and 36.2% shooting from three-point land. Alyssa Fisher has dished out a team high 89 assists.
ALL-TIME SERIES (HUMBOLDT vs. CSULA): Humboldt leads the all-time series 17-10 including winning four of the last six meetings. The two teams split the last two meetings in 2019-20 with Humboldt winning 72-70 in Arcata on November 23, 2019. CSULA won 80-74 in Los Angeles on January 18, 2020 in Los Angeles. This is the first time that the two teams are facing each other this season.
CAL STATE SAN MARCOS : Entering their game at Sonoma State on Thursday, the Cougars are 19-2 overall and 17-1 in the CCAA. They have won their last 15 games in a row including both games last week 80-70 over Chico State and 82-64 over Stanislaus State at home. Four players are averaging double digits in scoring in Akayla Hackson (15.9 ppg), Jordan Vasquez (14.5 ppg), Dynnah Buckner (13.7 ppg) and Kelsey Forrester (11.4 ppg). Hackson leads the team with her 80.6% shooting from the line, 44 steals, 10 blocked shots and 65 assists. Vasquez is shooting a team high 57% from the field and averaging a team high 8.7 rebounds per game. Forrester has made a team high 42.3% of her attempts from three-point land and connected on a team leading 60 three-point field goals.
ALL-TIME SERIES (HUMBOLDT vs. CSUSM): Cal State San Marcos leads the all-time series 6-4 including winning three of the last five meetings. The Cougars won both games in 2019-20, 59-56 in overtime on January 9, 2020 in Arcata and 81-70 on February 1, 2020 in San Marcos. This is the first time that the two teams are facing each other this season.
