Jacks Drop Final Matches of Green Chile Classic

SILVER CITY, NM—The Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks lost their final two matches in the Green Chile Classic this morning in Silver City, New Mexico.  The Jacks lost in four to Holy Names (20-25, 27-25, 17-25, 18-25) and to Wisconsin-Parkside (21-25, 20-25, 25-18, 18-25).  Nicole Yakushenok recorded her first double-double of the season with 21 assists and 15 digs against the Hawks.  In the Jacks' match against the Rangers, Lindsey McLaughlin had a match high 15 kills to go with her three total blocks.
 
HOLY NAMES 3, CAL POLY HUMBOLDT 1 (20-25, 27-25, 17-25, 18-25)
 
FIRST SET:  The first set was even until Humboldt took a 10-7 lead on a kill by Amanda Klotz off a pass from Nicole YakushenokElyse McKinney's block increased Humboldt's lead to 15-11.  Holy Names scored seven of the next ten points to tie the set at 18-18 on a kill by Lille Tuivailala.  The Hawks took a 20-18 on back-to-back kills by Tuiailala.  Humboldt scored the next two points capped by a kill by Klotz to tie the set at 20-20.  Holy Names (1-0) scored the set's final five points to take the first set, 25-20.
 
SECOND SET:  Once again, the second set was even until a Lenox Loving kill gave the Jacks a 19-14 lead.  A service ace by Lindsey McLaughlin increased their lead to 20-14.  The Hawks came back and cut the Humboldt lead to 24-22 on back-to-back kills by Lauren Sera.  They took a 25-24 lead on a kill by Tuivailala, but the Jacks scored the set's final two points to take the set, 27-25, and even the match at 1-1.
 
THIRD SET: For the third straight set, the two teams went back and forth to start the set.  The Jacks took a 10-8 on a Hawk service error.  Holy Names took a 15-12 lead on a kill by Rein Bocage.  The Hawks increased their lead to 20-15 on another kill by Tuivailala.  An hitting error by Holy Names cut the Humboldt deficit to 21-17, but the Hawks scored the set's final four points to take the third set 25-17.  With the win, Holy Names took a 2-1 advantage in the match.
 
FOURTH SET: A kill by Saupuni Mavaega gave Holy Names an early 3-1 lead in the fourth set.  The Jacks came back and took an 8-5 lead on a Malia Coyle block.  The Hawks recorded twelve of the next seventeen points to take a 17-13 lead on a kill by Camille Rivers.  They increased that lead to 21-15 on a block by Ayanna Barham.  A hitting error by Holy Names cut its lead to 21-17, but the Hawks finished out the set scoring the final four points to take the set 25-17.  Holy Names took the match, three sets to one.
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  Nicole Yakushenok recorded her first double-double of the season with a team high 21 assists and 10 digs.
 
LEADERS:  Avery McIntyre paced the Jacks with her 11 kills with a .381 hitting percentage.  Elyse McKinney and Lindsey McLaughlin each had six kills as McKinney had a .400 hitting percentage.  Nicole Yakushenok had 21 assists with Riley Tishlarich adding 13.  McLaughlin added three service aces and eight digs for the Jacks. 
 
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "We knew this would be a tough turn around after last night's match and it was good to see the desire to compete," noted head coach Angela Spoja.  "We came up short against Holy Names but not without some positive outcomes.  Middle, Avery McIntyre had 11 kills and two blocks, while Nicole Yakushenok had 10 digs and 21 assists.  We are moving in the right direction and will continue to work hard on all the skills we identified this weekend."
 
WISCONSIN-PARKSIDE 3, CAL POLY HUMBOLDT 1 (21-25, 20-25, 25-18, 18-25)
 
SET ONE:  Wisconsin-Parkside came out quick to take a 5-1 lead in the first set. The Rangers increased their lead to 12-5 on a Lexi Packard service ace.  The Jacks cut the deficit to 16-15 on a kill by Lindsey McLaughlin off a pass from Gianna Giacomotto. Humboldt (1-2) cut the deficit once again to 19-18, but the Rangers finished off the set 25-21 by scoring six of the final 11 points.
 
SET TWO: The second set was evenly played until the Rangers took  an 18-16 lead on a service ace by Maddy Dokken.  Humboldt scored the next point to cut the deficit to 18-17.  The Rangers increased their lead to 22-18 on a service error.  The Jacks took the next point, 22-19, on a Ranger service error.  Wisconsin-Parkside finished the set off taking three of the final four points, 25-20 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
SET THREE:  The Rangers took a 7-1 lead to begin the third set, but the Jacks would not go away. Humboldt took a 18-17 lead on a Macy Thomas service ace.  They scored seven of the set's final eight points to take the set 25-18 capped by a Lindsey McLaughlin kill.
 
SET FOUR: In the fourth set, Wisconsin-Parkside took an early 4-1 lead.  The Jacks came back and cut the deficit to 8-6 on a Ranger service error.  The Rangers increased their lead to 21-11 on a hitting error by the Jacks.  Back-to-back kills by Lenox Loving and Macy Thomas cut the Jack deficit to 22-14.  Wisconsin-Parkside took a 24-16 lead, but a Loving kill snapped the Ranger rally.  A kill by Jazmine Neal finished off the set for the Rangers as they took the fourth set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
 
LEADERS:  Lindsey McLaughlin had a match high 15 kills while Nicole Yakushenok had 29 assists.  Macy Thomas had a team high two service aces and ten digs to lead the Jacks.
 
QUOTES FROM THE COACH:  "Parkside was a tough team to face," said Angela Spoja.  "They are disciplined on serve and setting and it was hard to get them out of system. Gianna Giacomotto had a great serve receive game against them, while Else Kalar made her debut with eight kills and three digs.  Again, we came up short and will work to improve Monday in the gym."
 
HOME OPENER:  The Jacks will host Cal State East Bay in both their CCAA and home opener of the 2022 regular season on Thursday, September 8.   Humboldt will face Cal State San Marcos on Saturday, September 10. Starting times for both matches are set for 5pm at Lumberjack Arena.
