ARCATA, Calif.---- Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks finished their season opening two-match homestand with a scoreless draw with the visiting Holy Names Hawks this afternoon at College Creek Field. Sophomore goalkeeper
Adrian Gallardo recorded his first shutout of the season with five saves on the afternoon. The Jacks outshot Holy Names 18-15 including 7-5 in shot on goal attempts. They also held a 10-8 corner kick advantage.
FIRST HALF: Holy Names (0-0-2) had chance very early in the match to take the lead when
Adrian Gallardo stopped Rene Hidalgo's shot in the eighth minute. Two minutes later, Humboldt had a chance for the lead when
Ramiro Rosas' shot attempt by the Hawks' keeper Mailel Rios. The Jacks had another chance for the lead in the 29
th minute when
Edgar Castaneda's shot was stopped by Rios. Holy Names saw it chance for the lead high over the net in the 28
th minute. Humboldt had another chance in the 33
rd minute but
Diego Ramos' shot attempt went high over the net. The Jacks had one more chance late in the half, but
Juan Perez's shot was went wide left to send the match into the second half scoreless.
SECOND HALF: Once again, the Hawks had an early chance for the lead in the second half but Gallardo stopped Gabriel Ventura's attempt in the 51
st minute. Three minute later,
Marcus Abdel-Malek looked like he was going to give Cal Poly Humboldt (0-0-2) the lead but shot on goal attempt was st0pped by Rios. With 21 minutes left in the half, Nico Herrera-Land had a chance to give the hosts the 1-0 lead but the Hawks' defense stopped the ball from going into the net. With six minutes left in the match,
Alex Lopez had his shot sail wide left as the match ended in a scoreless draw.
NUMBER EIGHT: Adrian Gallardo recorded his eighth shutout in his career as a Jack. He had five saves in 90 minutes en route to his first shutout of the season.
18-15: The Jacks held an 18-15 advantage in shot attempts. Three of those attempts came from
Juan Perez, two each from
Edgar Castaneda,
Alex Lopez,
Ramiro Rosas and
Marcus Abdel-Malek.
UP NEXT: Cal Poly Humboldt will return to the pitch in Hawai'i for a two-match road trip. The Jacks will face Hawai'I Pacific on Sept. 1 at 7pm (MT) and Hawai'i Hilo on Sept. 4 at 11am (MT). They will return home on Sept. 7 as the Jacks will host Simpson at 3pm.
