ROHNERT PARK, Calif.--- A penalty kick in the 76th minute by Nathan Arnott stopped any hopes of a Lumberjack comeback, as Sonoma State prevailed for a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Seawolf Soccer Field. Dylan Tovani scored the Jacks lone goal while Alex Lopez, Juan Perez, Motoki Sato, Nico Herrera Land and Jordon Bruton all had shot attempts. Adrian Gallardo tied his season high with six saves in the loss.
FIRST HALF: It didn't take long for Sonoma State to get on the board, as Patrick Neill's shot landed within the first thirty seconds to give the Seawolves an early 1-0 advantage. The Jacks would respond minutes later when Dylan Tovani's penalty kick after a foul by Federico Barbieri equalized the score. Barbieri had a chance to take the lead in the 39th minute, but his attempt was saved by Gallardo. Bruton would answer with a response of his own minutes later that was saved by Seawolf goalkeeper Reinier Ter Riet. Sonoma's Sean Rohane would attempt one more shot with seconds remaining, but it would miss the target, as both teams would enter the half tied at 1.
SECOND HALF: Sonoma's first shot attempt of the second period would come in the 53rd minute behind a shot by Bryan Rosales. Tovani's attempt in the 68th minute would also be blocked for the Lumberjacks. Shots in the 71st and 72nd minutes by Lopez and Perez would also be thwarted by Ter Riet. Sonoma's breakthrough would come in the 77th minute, after a yellow card on Ethan Conaty gave Nathan Arnott a penalty kick opportunity to give the Seawolves a 2-1 advantage. Perez's shot in the 88th minute would be off target, as Sonoma would take the victory.
STATS: Overall, Sonoma State held advantages in shots (22-10) and corner kicks (8-6). The game would also see a total of six yellow cards, three on Humboldt and three on Sonoma.
UP NEXT: The Lumberjacks return to the friendly confines of College Creek field, where they will host no.1 ranked Cal State LA on Friday, Sept. 30 at 12:30pm.
