ARCATA, Calif.--- The Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks dropped their second straight contest after a 76-60 loss to the visiting Golden Eagles of Cal State Los Angeles on Thursday evening at Lumberjack Arena. Madison Parry had 17 points and seven rebounds while Devon Lewis had 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Jaydon Williams also chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss, which dropped the Jacks to 6-7 overall and 4-5 in CCAA play.
"There's losses and then there's how we lose," head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson said. "We got out-worked and out-toughed tonight."
From the tip, the North Coast squad failed to gather momentum, falling behind early 8-2 and trailing 20-11 after the first quarter. Los Angeles took advantage of forced turnovers, as the Jacks gave the ball up eight times in the first half compared to just two turnovers for the Golden Eagles. The Jacks also failed to score baskets as the team shot 29 percent from the field and went 0-8 from 3-point in the first half. This combination allowed the L.A. squad to outscore Humboldt 21-11 in the second quarter to take a 41-22 advantage going into halftime.
"Unfortunately, we're a team that's really relying on our offense," the coach said. "If we struggle offensively, it affects us in so many different ways."
The Lumberjacks found a bit more of a rhythm to start the second half, but not enough to claw away at the double digit deficit that persisted through a majority of the game. The Golden Eagles never let their lead slip below 13 points in the second half, as the team finished off with a 76-60 victory.
Coach Bento-Jackson said that the team will need to reinstill the intangibles as the conference season continues to get more and more difficult.
"This isn't an X's and O's issue, so to speak," Bento-Jackson said. "Certainly there's things we have to clean up on both ends of the floor, but it's the intangible things that we have to do consistently."
