SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.--- Cal Poly Humboldt had multiple chances, but a poor free-throw shooting performance paired with costly turnovers in the final minute of action proved to be the decider, as the 'Jacks dropped their fifth consecutive game against Cal State San Bernardino 64-58 on Saturday afternoon. After a rough Thursday night game against Cal Poly Pomona,
Madison Parry returned as the team's leading scorer with 19 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Sara Ahmadpour scored 16 off the bench to go along with seven rebounds, three steals and one assist. With the loss, the Lumberjacks fall to 6-10 and 4-8 in CCAA play while the 'Yotes won their second straight to move to 10-8 and 5-7 in conference play.
The North Coast squad has made a habit of slow starts, as the team started the game by falling behind 11-1 halfway through the first quarter. However, an old fashioned 3-point play by Parry sparked a 13-2 Lumberjack run over the next two and a half minutes.
Kaz Parks hit a 3-pointer to give Humboldt its first lead of the day, 14-13 with two minutes left in the first frame. The two teams battled back and forth, but it was San Bernardino who took the lead at the end of the quarter with a shot at the buzzer by Nikki Mayoral to go up 19-18. San Bernardino took its second highest lead of the game after a fastbreak layup by Destiny Jackson gave the 'Yotes a nine point advantage with 3:41 left in the first half. The Lumberjacks closed the half on a 7-2 run to bring the deficit down to four points, 33-29.
Humboldt took its first lead of the half just a little over halfway through the third quarter when an Ahmadpour trey gave the 'Jacks a 39-38 advantage. Neither team was able to break away as Humboldt held on to a narrow 46-45 lead heading into the final frame. A 3-pointer by Jackson regained the lead for San Bernardino to kick off the fourth quarter. San Bernardino increased its lead to six with 6:26 left to play after Mia Finnie hit a shot to give the hosts a 54-48 advantage. The Jacks responded by back-to-back layups from
Jaydon Williams and
Devon Lewis to get within two. Moments later, Williams again hit a shot to tie things up at 54 with less than five minutes remaining. Back-to-back scoring possessions by the 'Yotes gave the home team a five point cushion with 3:43 left but a score by Williams again chipped the lead down to just three with a little over two minutes remaining. Unfortunately, turnovers killed the 'Jacks momentum, as the team mustered only one field goal in the last two minutes of action and were forced to foul, as San Bernardino came away with the 64-58 victory.
NOTABLE STATS
As a team, the North Coast squad failed to secure the basketball, giving up 24 turnovers to San Bernardino's 16. The 'Jacks shot 38 percent from the field and 33 percent from behind-the-arc, but only shot 62 percent from the free-throw line, including missing all three attempts from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter. Humboldt outscored the 'Yotes on the fastbreak 21-12, but were outscored in second chance points (16-10) and points in the paint (36-28).
Individually, Parry and Ahmadpour both scored in double digits for the 'Jacks.
