ARCATA, Calif. -- Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer saw a thrilling comeback come up just short when they hosted the No. 21 ranked Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes (Yotes) at College Creek Field on Sunday. With nearly 400 fans in attendance, the Jacks went on a late two-goal run but fell to the Yotes with a final score of 3-2. Humboldt dropped to 3-4-1 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play after facing two nationally ranked opponents over the weekend.
Humboldt jumped on the attack early when
Juan Perez and
Duke Romanchak each had shots that were blocked by the CSUSB defenders in the 12
th minute of play. At the 19:20 mark, the Yotes got on on the board when Nicklaus Sullivan scored on a Jonathan Mayen assist to put CSUSB up 1-0. The Jacks turned up the offensive aggressiveness, as they tallied five more shots before the half ended. The Yotes held a 1-0 advantage at the half despite being out shot 8-3 by Humboldt.
The Yotes added to their lead in the 58
th minute when Brian Castillo scored on a Tony Negrete assist, making it a 2-0 CSUSB advantage.
Cooper Stephens gave the Lumberjacks a surge of momentum when he found the back of the net on
Konnor Rowan assist to get the Jacks on the board in the 67
th minute. Less than two minutes later at the 68:42 mark,
Cooper Stephens assisted
Juan Perez for the equalizer goal, making it a 2-2 score.
George Binda almost gave Humboldt the advantage as the Jacks had a good look on a breakaway, but Binda's shot just went out left. In the 74
th minute, the Yotes regained their lead when Adrian Aguilar converted on Tony Negrete's assist, making it a 3-2 CSUSB advantage. Making a final effort to even the score,
Juan Perez put a shot on goal that was saved by the Yotes' keeper. After an
Adrian Gallardo save, he pushed up field when Humboldt was granted a corner kick in the last minute of play and in the final seconds took a shot that went out left. No. 21 ranked San Bernardino held on to defeat the Jacks with a final score of 3-2.
