CHICO, Calif. -- Cal Poly Humboldt closed out 2023 on the road at Chico State Sunday afternoon from Art Acker Gymnasium. Coming in with both teams posting a 2-2 CCAA record, the Wildcats managed to get the best of Humboldt and defeated the Jacks with a final score of 80-56.
Cal Poly Humboldt got off to a slow start in the first quarter and Chico State took advantage. Despite falling behind 6-0 to start, back-to-back three pointers from
Sara Ahmadpour evened the game at 10. However, the Jacks had seven turnovers in the first 10 minutes of play and the Wildcats scored 18 of their 23 points in the paint. Humboldt struggled to find an answer and found themselves down 23-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats continued to apply the pressure and extend their lead in the second quarter as they went on a huge 21-3 run. The Jacks were outscored 22-9 in the second quarter and went into the lockers down 45-21 at the half.
A change of game plan saw the Lumberjacks come out with a spark in the second half. Between
Jadis Watson and
Renske Tool, Humboldt was able to establish a presence down low and scored 10 of their 17 points in the paint. The Jacks won the third quarter 17-11, but still were down 56-38 with just 10 minutes left to play.
Chico's Morgan Mathis hit a three-pointer at the 7:02 mark to put the Wildcats up 24 points. The Jacks responded with a 7-2 run that was led by
Kacie Slover,
Marley Johnson, and
Sara Ahmadpour to cut the lead to 18 points. With 4:34 left in the game,
Emilia Long converted on a fast break layup to give a glimpse of hope for the Lumberjacks. Chico State went on a 12-4 run to close out the game and finished on top with a final score of 80-56.
Lumberjack Low-Down
- Emilia Long and Sara Ahmadpour each posted a team-high 11 points
- Jadis Watson was a presence in the paint with eight points on 75% shooting
- Kacie Slover led with seven rebounds
- Chico outshout Humboldt 47.7% compared to 32.8% from the field
- Despite being almost even on the turnovers (20-18), Chico had 24 points off turnovers compared to nine points from Humboldt
- The Wildcats had 46 points in the paint compared to Humboldt's 24 points
