Jacks Fall Short at San Marcos in Undefeated Battle

SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Humboldt women's basketball team fell short against the Cal State San Marcos Cougars on Thursday evening at The Sports Center with a final score of 43-57. The Cougars and Lumberjacks were set for an intense match, as both came in undefeated in conference. Despite their scoring drought in the second half of the game, Kenya Edelhart tallied up a total of 12 points. Marley Johnson provided the Jack's some defensive skill, with eight rebounds, two blocks, and two steals, a team high in all three.

Game Summary

The Jacks picked up where they left off, as they outscored their opponent early on. The Cougars opened up the scoring with a three-pointer in the second minute of the game, however two minutes later Kenya Edelhart made her own three-pointer, equalizing the game. In Lumberjack fashion, the women's team kept it an intense back and forth game, playing with skill and heart. At the end of first quarter Jack's were down 13-16.

The second quarter opened up again with a pair of three-pointers. The Cougars first scored in the second minute, then followed by the Jacks when Marley Johnson got a fast-break and scored her three points of the game. The Jacks managed to overtake the Cougs when Kenya Edelhart scored, making the game 23-22. The last thirty seconds of the half, San Marcos earned themselves two free throws and took the lead back. To send themselves into the half on a good note, Emilia Long sank a three-pointer to put Humboldt up by 26-24.

The second half quickly became one-sided. The San Marcos Cougars came back hungry, scoring 33 of their 57 points just in the second half. The Lumberjacks were unable to keep up, not making a single three-pointer, while the Cougars collected six. The end of the game got away from the Jacks as San Marcos' shooting in the 4th quarter was 43.75% (7-16), compared to Humboldt's 21.42% (3-14). This 57-43 loss to San Marcos, who received votes in the national rankings this past week, marks Cal Poly Humboldt's first CCAA loss on the season.
