ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Humboldt women's basketball team faced off against the Sonoma State Seawolves on Saturday afternoon from the Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. A comfortable lead slowly slipped away from the Jacks and saw the Seawolves finish on top with a final score of 64-54. Emilia Long stood out for Humboldt once again, this time with 17 points on 63.6 percent shooting, four rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
Scoreless for nearly the first two minutes, Sonoma gets on the board first off a three-pointer from Madison Clark. Kenya Edelhart sank a mid range jumper nearly three minutes into the game to get Humboldt going. Emilia Long gave the Jacks a 4-3 lead on a layup that was assisted by Rayshanti McNeal Price. The Lumberjack defense held Sonoma to just 4-12 shooting in the first quarter but the Seawolves went 3-8 from deep, including one at the buzzer to end the first up 13-11. McNeal Price had some big minutes early, collecting four points, four rebounds, and a steal early on in the first quarter.
Sonoma started the second quarter hot, but Marley Johnson got a long ball to fall and tied the game 18-18 with a little over four minutes to go before the half. Seawolves went on a 8-0 run to go up 26-18 but the Jacks responded with a 5-0 run of their own to cut the lead to three 26-23. Sonoma however maintained the lead until the buzzer and went into the lockers up 30-28 over Humboldt. The Seawolves average 14 offensive rebounds a game and the Jacks did a great job on the rebounding, holding Sonoma to only two offensive rebounds in the first half. Emilia Long was a perfect 4-4 from the field and 2-2 from free throw line, which led the team with 10 points at the half.
Humboldt came out of the locker room on fire. Long's driving layup gave Humboldt a 33-32 lead and the Jacks didn't look back, as the offense exploded for a 14-2 run. The Jacks defense created seven turnovers in the third quarter and the offensive played in transition, scoring 10 fast break points. Humboldt outscored the Seawolves 19-6 to open the second half and took a 47-36 lead over Sonoma State with one quarter left to play.
Sonoma didn't fold and opened the fourth quarter with an 9-1 run to chop the Lumberjack lead to three, 48-45. The Seawolves regained the lead 51-50 with three minutes left to go in the game. Humboldt went scoreless for 5:12 and were out scored 28-7 in the fourth quarter, resulting in a 64-54 loss on the road.
