SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Humboldt women's basketball team (9-16, 7-13 CCAA) took on Cal State San Marcos (21-4, 18-3 CCAA) on Thursday evening from The Sports Center and fell to the No. 18 Cougars with a final score of 69-59.
Madison Parry led the 'Jacks with 16 points, while both
Sara Ahmadpour and
Zyan Smith each had 14 points.
The 'Jacks grabbed their first lead of the game after a pair of converted free throws from
Madison Parry at the 3:02 mark. A jumper from
Zyan Smith with 1:47 to go in the first quarter gave Humboldt a five-point lead, 13-8, their largest of the game. A 5-0 run from the Cougars in the final minute left the first quarter all tied at 13 a piece.
Parry hit a three-pointer to get the 'Jacks rolling in the second quarter, while Smith followed up with a shot from beyond the arc to help Humboldt maintain their lead with seven minutes to go before the half. The Cougars fought back, but a pair of Ahmadpour three-pointers and
Kaz Parks triple saw Humboldt up by one point with 3:31 to go. An impressive 50% shooting from three-point range for Humboldt in the second quarter wasn't enough to hold the lead, as the Cougars shot 56.2% in the second quarter and went up 36-31 at the half.
Both teams shot poorly in the third quarter, with neither the Cougars nor the Lumberjacks surpassing the 30% mark. San Marcos outscored Humboldt 12-9 and extended their lead to eight points, 48-40.
The fourth quarter saw both teams find their rhythm from the floor again, with San Marcos shooting 42.9% (6-of-14) and Humboldt shooting 38.9% (7-of-18). At the 4:39 mark, the 'Jacks cut the game to four points, 57-53, on a
Zyan Smith fast break layup. After Humboldt's 7-2 run, the Cougars respond with a 7-2 run of their own in the final minute and held on to win 69-59.
