TURLOCK, Calif. -- Cal Poly Humboldt extended their winning streak to four games after the offense exploded for a total of 19 hits and 16 runs on Saturday to remain undefeated at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock. In game one, Humboldt defeated Azusa Pacific University in six innings via mercy rule with a final score of 10-2. In game two, the Lumberjacks took down the Sharks of Hawai'i Pacific University with a final score of 6-2.
Micaela Harris led the team with five hits on the day, while
Gaige Garcia and
Karen Di Dio each picked up wins in the circle.
GAME 1 VS. AZUSA PACIFIC
The Lumberjack bats came alive early and often against the Cougar pitching, as Humboldt recorded nine runs on nine hits and two errors through just three innings of play. Eight out of the nine Lumberjack batters in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit. Through four innings of play the 'Jacks led 9-0. Needing a pair of runs to keep the game from ending via mercy rule, Azusa Pacific was able to scratch two runners across the plate and extend the game into the sixth inning with a score of 9-2. In the bottom of the sixth inning,
Julia Rivera was hit by a pitch that put her on base for the second time in the game.
McKenna Beach came up next and doubled to right field that put Humboldt in a position to end the game early.
Anna Brondos did just that, singling up the middle to cap off a season high 14-hit performance and win over Azusa Pacific via mercy rule, 10-2. Despite a great offensive performance, the pitching combination of
Gaige Garcia,
Vanessa Richie, and
Jaidyn Gamble held the Cougars to just two runs.

GAME 2 VS. HAWAI'I PACIFIC
Hawai'i Pacific got on the scoreboard early as they went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Cal Poly Humboldt responded in the bottom of the first with four runs of their own on two hits and one error. A
Kristin Ingram single, followed by a
Katlyn Gifford walk brought up
Vanessa Saltos. With two outs in the inning already, Saltos proved to be clutch and doubled down the right field line that drive in two runs.
McKenna Beach was hit by a pitch and
Anna Brondos walked to load the bases for
Ciera Pyle. Pyle reached on a throwing error by the shortstop that resulted in two unearned runs and a 4-1 lead for Cal Poly Humboldt. In the bottom of the second inning,
Micaela Harris doubled down the left field line and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. The pitching struggles continued for the Sharks, as Ingram was hit by a pitch and advanced to second base on another wild pitch. With one out in the inning,
Alyssa Smokey laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored Harris and gave the 'Jacks a 5-1 lead heading into the third inning. Hawai'i Pacific and Humboldt each scratched a run across the plate in the fourth inning that made it a 6-2 game. The rest of the way, the Lumberjacks gave up four hits but allowed no runs and held on to win their fourth straight with a final score of 6-2.
Vanessa Richie,
Karen Di Dio, and
Ava Hand staffed the game in the circle. Di Dio came away with her first win of the season. Cal Poly Humboldt improved to 14-18 overall after defeating Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday afternoon.
