SEASIDE, Calif. -- Cal Poly Humboldt traveled to the central coast to take on the Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) Otters on Friday at The Kelp Bed. The Otters defended their home court and defeated the Jacks with a final score of 0-3 (17-25, 14-25, 21-25). CSUMB improved to 4-8 overall and pick up their first conference win, while the Jacks dropped to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.
The Jacks scored back-to-back points to even the score at five after an
Elyse McKinney kill and Otter attack error. CSUMB went on to score 12 of the next 15 points, extending their lead to 17-8. Humboldt was able to cut the Otter lead to six on kills from
Ryleeh Tuaolo and
Lindsey McLaughlin, but the Jacks surrendered set one with a final score of 17-25.
CSUMB jumped out to 4-0 lead to begin set two, and then proceeded to go on a run that put them up 21-8. Two straight kills from
Awelina Fakalata and a service ace from
Ryleeh Tuaolo brought the Jacks to within 10 points, 24-14, but it was too late as the Otters closed out set two with a score of 25-14 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was a back and forth battle between the teams, as Monterey went on an early run to put them up 13-5. The teams traded points and each added 10 to their total, making it a 23-15 score. Humboldt inched their way back and didn't go down without a fight. The Jacks scored six out of the final eight points to make a comeback effort fall just short, as CSUMB closed set three with a 25-21 win over Humboldt to take the match three sets to none.
