Humboldt Sweeps Adams State on Friday in Dominant Fashion

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- Cal Poly Humboldt surpassed their 2022 season win total on Friday when they swept Adams State to pick up their third win of the season. The Lumberjacks improved to 3-3 following another double-double performance from Awelina Fakalata (13 kills, 11 digs).

"We had a good team effort tonight and had several attackers put up good numbers," said head coach Angela Spoja. "Mina Barajas is really learning her position as libero and had over five digs a set against Adams State. I think we can count on Awelina Fakalata to keep doing what she's doing along with Lindsey McLaughlin, so if we clean up a few more things we should be very solid. Slavik had over 15 assists per set this match, and that is more of what I want to see from her. I'm excited that we are playing solid volleyball this early in the season."

Match Summary
Despite falling behind early in set one 9-3, the 'Jacks fought back to tie the set at 12 points. Still tied at 17 after exchanging points, Humboldt scored four straight points to grab the momentum, but Adams State did not go away easily. The Grizzly Bears fought back to tie the set at 22, before the 'Jacks responded with a kill from Avery McIntyre, Awelina Fakalata, and a service ace from Lindsey McLaughlin to close out set one 25-22.

Humboldt was in control of set two from the beginning and jumped out to a comfortable 14-9 lead. The 'Jacks never trailed in set two and maintained the four point lead until the end which resulted in a 25-21 victory.

The difference maker in set three was two large Lumberjacks runs. Humboldt scored seven of eight points to gain a lead and the momentum, then tallied on six straight points just a few moments later to jump out to a 21-14 advantage. With their backs against the wall, Adams State surrendered set three with a score of 25-17, leading to a Lumberjack sweep.
